Modelling Levels of Development with reference to RIBA Digital Plan of Works

BIM DESIGN DAY
WhatistheCUBE?
This project sets out to explore and demonstrate the key methods of the BIM process and the potential for creative
design within those workflows using Vectorworks Architect. For this project a key objective is to demonstrate the
benefits of an organised workflow and to show that organisation can have an empowering rather than restricting
effect on the creative process. A second objective is to embed the project with a level of longevity, which will allow
the material to evolve and develop over time.
In order to achieve the objectives, a key strategy for the first part of the project is to produce a building with a
minimal cube form and a stripped down aesthetic. This specifically allows participants to concentrate on the
underlying principles and workflows at work. Once those founding and core principles have been fully defined, the
project scope will open up to fully explore the creative aspects of Vectorworks Architect.
The ‘spine’ or framework of the project is to be set within the context of the RIBA Plan of Work, British Standards
(esp BS1192), Levels of Detail and BIM protocols including Business Execution Plan ( BEP ), Employee Information
Requirements ( EIR ) and the Government Level 2 BIM Mandate including COBie.
InternalCollaboration
The Cube is a 4 storey commercial building, with office spaces and
san auditorium. With the release of truly game-changing features in
Vectorworks 2016, our project team was able to collaboratively develop
and build this Intelligent model within a relatively short space of time.
Project Sharing allowed our team of 5, which consisted of Architects,
Technology Specialists and Interior Designers, to transition through
the varying LOD’s (Fig 1.1) at an astounding pace. Working files were
distributed to each team member, who then committed their changes to
the project file, all at the click of a button.

BIM DESIGN DAY
Seven Steps to BIM
1. Setup & Standards
Organise your Stories, Design Layers and your
Classes for modelling instead of for drafting.
2. Start BIM early
You do not need to plug in a lot of information at
the beginning of the process with BIM. You can
actually start at a very conceptual level, refining
your model as you go along
3. Manage your Data
Utilising intelligent objects such as Spaces,
instead of Polygons/Extrusions, enables you
to produce reports and schedules from this
information.
4. Intelligent Tools
Intelligent tools might mean parametric tools
or direct modelling tools which can be defined
and edited using parameters such as size or
configuration.
5. Replace not Remodel
This ability to refine is extremely powerful for
design development from a LOD 200-Design
Intent model, to a LOD 300-Assembly model.
6. Coordinated Views
Plans, sections & elevations can be extracted
from the same model. Specific views and
detailing can be highlighted by specific class/
layer visibilities.
7. IFC Data.
Interoperability is key to BIM. IFC data allows
you to share your BIM model and data with other
design teams.
