- 2. THE INTERVIEW FADE IN: INT. INTERVIEW ROOM - DAY Focus is on Mr Logan writing on a recruitment form. Mr Logan has a pen, a pad of paper, some official documents as well as an ID badge. Mr Logan picks up the ID badge from the desk and examines it. A phone rings. (Voice over phone) Mr Logan, we have Josh Martin here in reception. He’s here for his interview. Mr Logan looks puzzled. ANDREW Sorry, who? Mr Logan places the ID card down on the desk after examining it one last time. (Voice over phone) Josh Martin. Should I send him in sir? MR LOGAN Yes, ok. Send him in, thanks Connor. Call is terminated and a knock on the door follows. ANDREW Come in. JOSH opens the door and walks in. MR LOGAN You must be Mr Martin, is that correct? JOSH Yeah. Josh looks around the Interview room. He is surprisingly curious. ANDREW Well take a seat. Let’s get started! Josh sits. (CONTINUED)
- 3. CONTINUED: 2. ANDREW You alright? JOSH A bit nervous but that’s to be expected, isn’t it? Mr Logan nods his head and smiles but is picking up on the fact that Josh’s leg is shaking. ANDREW No need to be nervous. JOSH Ok. ANDREW Right, first of all let me introduce myself. My name’s Mr Logan, you can call me Andrew. I’m head of recruitment here at the company. So the first question I always ask potential employees is why do you want to have a career in engineering. JOSH Well, I guess it started when I was 12 years old. That was when I started to have a real fascination with engineering. I was fascinated with how things fit together and work the way that they do. Andrew writes down notes on his pad of paper. ANDREW Great answer. Next, why do you want to have a career with our company? JOSH Well, ummm. I think it’s because of the career prospects and all the benefits that you offer. You know, the experience, the skills, the travel nd of course the pay isn’t bad either. Sorry, how much was it if you don’t mind me asking? ANDREW Not at all. For the work that you’d be doing it would be estimated about forty five thousand pounds a year. (CONTINUED)
- 4. CONTINUED: 3. JOSH Right. Josh shows his obvious disappointment at the yearly pay. ANDREW You look disheartened. JOSH No, no I’m cool. ANDREW Right, where do you see yourself next year? JOSH Well I see myself progressing within the company, providing electrical support to European countries. Andrew raises his head and stops writing. ANDREW Travel? JOSH What? ANDREW You’ve mentioned travel twice? JOSH Ummm.. yeah. Don’t you specialise in engineering work abroad? Adam takes his glasses off and places the neatly on the table next to him. ANDREW We do however, this job isn’t catered towards international work. You’ll be based at the University of engineering just outside of Manchester. Andrew picks up on Josh’s frustration. ANDREW You sure you’re alright. JOSH Yeah, I’m fine. I just assumed I’d be working abroad. Josh looks towards the door door and back at Andrew who is now focusing on writing on his note pad. - 5. CONTINUED: 4. JOSH Look, ummm. I apologise for wasting your time but I’m really looking for a job abroad. Sorry. Josh turns towards the door and places his hand on the handle. ANDREW Hold on! Josh takes his hand off the door handle. ANDREW It just so happens that we do have an vacancy for an engineering job overseas in Finland. Is that something you’d be more interested in. JOSH Finland. Adam nods his head. JOSH Yes, that would be perfect. Thanks a lot. ANDREW Don’t thank me yet, you haven’t got the job yet. JOSH No, of course Josh returns to the chair and sits. ANDREW Ok, so to work as an engineer in a different country you need to have a visa to work there. You also need to have a number of specific qualifications. JOSH Yes. Josh hands Andrew his qualifications. Andrew then looks through them, murmuring to himself. ANDREW Very good, it seems you have all the qualifications necessary. A degree? You went to University? - 6. CONTINUED: 5. JOSH Yes, for a couple of years. ANDREW Expensive, tuition fees are aren’t they. JOSH No kidding, I’m still trying to pay for them even now. Andrew acknowledges Josh’s answer before moving on. ANDREW Have you ever worked for this council before? JOSH No I’m new to the area. I’ve just moved. ANDREW And you’ve already a staff member, employed by this council. JOSH Yes. Josh starts to become nervous and very weary of Andrew. ANDREW Then why do you still have an old ID badge registered to Stockton-on-Tees borough council in circulation. Andrew takes out the ID card and shows it to Josh. ANDREW This is you isn’t it? Andrew points to the ID picture. ANDREW And the most bizarre thing about this ID card is that it’s registered to you but in a different name. JOSH What?! ANDREW Same person, different name. Josh begins to panic. (CONTINUED)
- 7. CONTINUED: 6. JOSH Yes, it’s me. I’ve had a bit of a shady past so I changed my name when I moved here for a fresh start. Andrew looks at Josh with an unconvincing facial expression. JOSH You know what, just forget it. Josh stands up and makes his way towards the door. ANDREW When you said "shady past" you were referring to your time in prison. Josh looks shocked and slightly angered while Adam is calm and complacent. JOSH How did you know about that? ANDREW I have your criminal record sheet here. It states that you were in prison twice, the first time was for the robbery of a convenance store and the second time was for conspiracy to rob a bank. Lee starts to angry at Andrew. JOSH I don’t have to explain myself to you. Wait a minute, only police officials have access to criminal record sheets. ANDREW Yes I know. Adam smiles. Realising Andrew’s true identity and completely panics. JOSH Oh shit! Josh turns the door handle but it is locked. He struggles with the handle for a few moments. JOSH Why is this door locked? Open this door. (CONTINUED)
- 8. CONTINUED: 7. ANDREW You see, I didn’t realise who you were until you were so persistent on working abroad. JOSH Open this door now! Adam stands up and puts his glasses back on. ANDREW And then I realised your motive for wanting this job. It’s all coming together now. You still haven’t paid of your student loan debts which is why you were so interested in the pay but the amount of money you racked up through interest and all the rest of it, the yearly pay wouldn’t be able to cover the amount you own. DISSOLVE TO: INT. INTERVIEW ROOM -DAY Flashback to when Andrew was looking at Josh’s qualifications. He pulls out a form with his University debt list. JOSH You don’t understand anything. ANDREW No, what I understand is that with your past crime history, it would be extremely unlikely that anyone would employ you which is why you created two identities under two different councils, keeping the old one registered as you moved here. DISSLOVE TO: INT. INTERVIEW ROOM - DAY Black and white flashback of Adam looking at the ID card which Adam then turns over, showing his other name. ANDREW You knew that under your real name the criminal records would be visible at the point of inspection but under the name Josh Martin your crimes would able to go undetected for quite (MORE) (CONTINUED)
- 9. CONTINUED: 8. ANDREW (cont’d) some time. Long enough for you to travel to Finland perhaps on your new oversees job. When the police eventually find out what you’ve done they’d be after you however, the police in this country would need all sorts of jurisdictions in order to start an international manhunt and that would’t be financial practical. You would’ve gotten away with it. JOSH Very clever however, you missed forget one crucial point. If I was to run away to God knows where, why would I bother to look for a job. ANDREW Because according to your bank statement, you’re broke and with no job, you’d be stuck here. And that’s all that’s needed to get a conviction. JOSH You son of a.. ANDREW Josh Martin I am arresting you for creating a farudulant identity. Josh shows a defeated expression on his face. DISSOLVE TO: INT. HALLWAY - DAY Andrew makes a call on his phone. ANDREW Yeah, it’s DI Logan. I have the suspect restrained, requesting back up. (Phone voice over) On our way. Good job sir, you got him. Phone call cuts off as Andrew smiles to the camera. FADE OUT: Black background followed by end credits. THE END.
