A day in their lifes
Joana
Profile: Joana is 21 years old and is studying for her bachelors degree.
Joana comes from a typical Portuguese upbringing and lives at home
with her family near the city centre. She communicates regularly with
her friends through Facebook, Whatsapp and phone calls and spends
her free time socialising with them. Joana gets a monthly allowance
from her parents to spend at university and in her free time but tries
to save as much of it for the weekends. Her main pains are that she is
always busy trying to balance her school work load and free time and
finds that she is constantly in a hurry throughout the week. To over
come obstacles she prioritises and schedules time to study every day.

Personal Objective:
Maximise time spent
with friends and family.
Save money in the week
for weekend activities
Professional Objective:
Joana hopes to become a
lawyer after graduating
university.

Day in the Life: Joana wakes up 1.5 hours before class and has breakfast
before driving to university. If she arrives on time she has a coffee and
smokes a cigarette before class. After class, she breaks for lunch, where
she will meet her friends and go to the bar for a sandwich and coke.
After her lunch hour, Joana meets other students on campus for group
projects and to study, usually by the end of this Joana starts to get
hungry and has to go back to the bar or the vending machine.
Sometimes Joana has another class in the evening. After university she
drives home for dinner with her family and watches tv, sometimes
meeting with friends for a drink after this.

Students

Andrea

Personal Objective:
•
•
•
•
•
•

Being able to meet temptations
and distractions calmly and
resolutely. .
Building self-control
Become Healthier
Keeping focus on her objectives.
Gaining more confidence
Manage her time better

Professional Objective:
• Have a challenging but successful
career
• Being more efficient at work

Profile:
Andrea works as financial consultant. Her job requires a lot of work and dedication, but she’s
still very worried about her health so she often try to eat healthy and to take care of herself.
She likes exercising and going to fitness when she has the time. But she finds that eating
healthy is very difficult because she’s always busy working and there’s very little healthy
restaurants around her job.
Andrea lives by herself in an apartment in the centre of the city. She really tries to save some
money but she often spend too much money on food because it is the only way to eat healthy
and good quality food when working.
Andrea is a very dedicated person, and has clear objectives in her life, but she often slips from
them, looses her self-control and sometimes gets even depressed, powerless, and weak
because of too much pressure from her job.
During the weak she tries to bring food from home in a lunch box, but sometimes she feels
unsatisfied because of the cold food. Also, she can’t really choose what food to bring at work
as most of the food she likes becomes tasteless after some hours.
She would like easier ways and more convenient ways to stay healthy without loosing time
and money, sometimes she feels frustrated because she can’t keep enough motivation in
order to do that.

Day in the Life:
Andrea wakes up at 6:30, she takes a shower and eats her breakfast. At 7:30 she leaves her
house to be at 8:30 at work. She goes by bus. She works for 2 hours and often get’s and often
needs to eat something, therefore she takes a 5 minute break and goes back to work until
mid-day. For lunch, 30% of the time she brings food from home, the other 70% of the time she
goes to fast foods and restaurant near to her job. She only has 1 hour break so as soon as she
eats she has to come back to work. She leaves work at 6 pm and goes directly to fitness, she
has to buy something to eat on the way to keep her energy. After fitness she goes back home,
around 8:30 pm, she makes herself dinner, she enjoys her 3 hours of free time and then goes
to sleep. On weekends she often go out with her friends and family.

Professionals
Andrea the professional
Rui
Profile: Rui is 34 years old and has completed an apprenticeship at a big
insurance company. He has been working for the company for 12 years
already. He lives with his small family in a residential area of Lisbon. He
spends a lot of time with family and friends. His income is enough to
provide his family – however he would like to put more money on the
side. His family is living a healthy life and they like sports. As an
insurance agent/broker he has to be very flexible and sometimes his
schedule is quite tight, moving around a lot in the Lisbon area where
most of his clients are based.
Personal Objective: He is
working to live – not living to
work. Family and friends are
important and even though
his job required s lot of
flexibility he has a good
work/life balance
Professional Objective:
He hopes to become an area

team leader.

Day in the Life: Rui´s schedule varies a lot, but most of the time he gets
up between 7-8. He has breakfast at home and then he either goes to his
office or a client appointment. Most of the days his schedule doesn't
leave him enough time to go home and have lunch with his family. His
wife or he himself often prepare food, which he brings with him to work.
He normally eats on his own in between client meetings. When he has
an office day he goes for lunch with collegues. Sometimes he also has
lunch with clients. In the afternoon Rui normally gets a snack from a
Pastelaria. After his work he regularly does sports and has dinner with
his family eat home. Occasionally they go out for dinner and drinks with
friends.
