MATH LAB APPROACH
IN PRIMARY MATHEMATICS
LEARNING BY DOING
• • Promotes active engagement and
hands-on exploration
• • Based on Piaget’s theory of
constructivism
• • Encourages deep understanding through
doing
• • CRA Model: Concrete →
Representational → Abstract
CRA EXAMPLE: PLACE
VALUE
•• Concrete: Base-ten blocks to
show 123
•• Representational: Draw blocks
(100 + 20 + 3)
•• Abstract: Write number
symbolically as 123
UNDERSTANDING THE
CRA SEQUENCE
• Concrete: Hands-on manipulation
(e.g. blocks, paper shapes)
• Representation: Drawings, diagrams
• Abstract: Symbols, numbers,
equations
EXAMPLES OF TOOLS FOR
CRA
•Base-10 blocks, fraction kits,
tangrams, geoboards
•Visual models: bar diagrams,
number lines
•Abstract representation:
equations, symbols
ACTIVITY + DISCUSSION
• Watch video of CRA in action
(students working)
• Group discussion:
Why do students struggle with abstract
math?
WHAT IS A MATH LAB?
• • A space or setup for learning math
through activities
• • Can be mobile or classroom-based
• • Focuses on learning by doing with
manipulatives
The "Math Lab Approach" in mathematics EDUCATION
STEPS TO PLAN A MATH
LAB ACTIVITY
• 1. Identify learning objective
• 2. Choose manipulatives/tools
• 3. Plan student interaction & scaffolding
• 4. Predict possible misconceptions
• 5. Include assessment/reflection
EXAMPLE TOPICS FOR
ACTIVITIES
• Fractions with paper
folding
• Area using grid paper
• Patterns with coloured
beads or shapes

LEARNING FRACTIONS
WITH CRA
•Goal: Experience math as a
student
•Focus: Understanding fractions
conceptually
STEP 1 – CONCRETE
STAGE
• Activity: Create 1/2, 1/4, 1/3 using
paper plates or fraction circles
• Discuss: What do you observe when
comparing sizes?
STEP 2 – REPRESENTATION
STAGE
• Activity: Draw visual models for
fractions
• Use bar models, circle models
• Pair share: How does the drawing
reinforce your understanding?
STEP 3 – ABSTRACT STAGE
• Solve problems using symbols only:
• 1/2 + 1/4 = ?
• 3/4 of 8 = ?
• Order: 1/2, 1/4, 1/3
MERITS VS DEMERITS
• Merits:
• ✓ Engages learners actively
• ✓ Supports conceptual understanding
• ✓ Joyful & collaborative learning
• Demerits:
• ✗ Time-consuming
• ✗ Requires preparation and materials
• ✗ Classroom management challenges
COMMON QUESTIONS &
TIPS
• What if I have no lab room? → Use
corners or mobile kits
• How to manage large classes? →
Small group rotations
• How to assess? → Observe, discuss,
check outcomes
REFLECTION &
APPLICATION
• • Plan one Math Lab activity for your future classroom
• • Share your idea with peers
• • Reflect on how it supports learning by doing
