21st Century Competencies
 Students need 21st Century competencies to
survive & thrive in the future.
Communication, creativity, and working
collaboratively are essential components for
success in the contemporary world.

Technology in the ClassroomToday
Introductions using Websites
 In teams of four
 You have 5 minutes to identify 3 common
websites that each member of the team visits
on a regular basis (do not include sites you
access for your email).
 Name ofWebsite
 Reason for visit
 Number of visits per week
Self Assessment
 Please take a moment to take the self
assessment.
 In small groups, discuss your strengths and
weaknesses.
Web 2.0 Tools
 Offer the opportunity for students to develop
21st century competencies.
 Allow for the integration of technology
throughout the learning experience.
 Blogs, Wikis, and Social Bookmarking allow
students the ability to connect with peers and to
work collaboratively without being in the same
room, school or state.
 Web 2.0Tools

Essential Learning Functions
 Having the functional ability to foster
collaboration will always be important even as
the tools that let you do this change.
 Unlike the tools themselves, such essential
learning functions are stable.
Once you identify a function you
need, sort through a growing array
of tools and select the ones that
deliver that function best for your
context.
Essential Learning Functions
1. Ubiquitous learning – 24/7 anytime anywhere
2. Authentic learning
3. Making things visible and discussable
4. Communication
5. Collaboration
6. Critical thinking and problem solving
7. Project management
8. Reflection and iteration

Essential Learning Functions
 In groups of 5, examine the assigned
essential learning function of digital tools
that are useful for instruction. Each essential
learning function is described, followed by a
list of specific tools.
 In a creative and collaborative manner, report
back to the large group what you learned
about the function and possible ways to use
digital tools that deliver that function.

those who cannot read and write, but those
who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn."

Lesson Planning using Web 2.0 Tools
 The 5e Process
 Engage
 Explore
 Explain
 Extend
 Evaluate
The 5e model was originally proposed by the BSCS
(Biological Science Curriculum Study)
Lesson Planning
We may remember times when we have had
little idea of what we were going to teach
before we walked into the classroom, and
other times when we have been required to
complete a formal lesson plan.
For most of us, planning everyday lessons
falls somewhere along this continuum.
Look at this diagram .Where would you place
your own lesson planning on this continuum?
Lesson Plans and Web 2.0 Tools
 Think-Pair-Share
 Brainstorm independently about how you
could incorporateWeb 2.0 tools into a lesson
plan.
 Share your ideas with your group to get
feedback.
Blogs
 What is a Blog?
 Highlight educational blogs links.
 “How Can I Use Blogs in My Classroom?”
How can I use a Blog in my classroom?
 Whip Around Activity:
Each group member offers the first answer
that comes to mind about using a blog in
their classroom.
Wikis
 What is aWiki?
 Highlight educational wiki links.
 How can I use a wiki in my classroom?
How can I use a Wiki in my classroom?
K-W-L (i.e., Know, Want to know, Learn):
Activity
Brainstorm ideas around the following
questions:
 K: What do you already know about Wikis?
 L: What did you learn about Wikis?
 W: What do you still want to know about
Wikis?
Social Bookmarking
 What are Social Bookmarks?
 Highlight Social Bookmarking sites.
 How can social bookmarks be used in my
classroom?
How can I use social bookmarks in my
classroom?
Reading Activity
7ThingsYou Should Know About Social
Bookmarking
 Select a sentence that is meaningful to you.
Share the sentence and the reason why it is
important with the group.
Thought to Ponder…
 Much has been written recently about the impact of social
networking tools in teaching and learning and how
educators can build on the skills of their students in using
these tools. But if educators only integrate the ability of
students to connect and socialize, deeper points of learning
will be missed. While good teaching and learning rests on
effective relationships, in an active learning community,
those relationships should evolve into actual idea exchange
and knowledge construction.

Hands On with Web 2.0
We will have 2 groups for hands on activities:
1. Blogs – Krista & Jeff
2. Wikis –Tiffany & Jennifer
You can also do self exploration using:

Guided Questions
 Who will be your teachers?
 How are you going to build your personal learning
network (PLN)?
 How will you communicate with your PLN?
 How will you model your learning for your students?
 How have your ideas aboutWeb 2.0 tools and how
you can use them in your classroom changed by
doing this research?
 What are the obstacles you can foresee
implementingWeb 2.0 tools in your classroom
 How could usingWeb 2.0 tools benefit you and your
students?
Assessing Student Work
 How will you assess student work?
 Review sample assessments and discuss
methods for evaluating student work.
Workshop Evaluation
 Please logon to the blog and post your
comments:
 How will you useWeb 2.0 tools in your classroom to
foster CREATIVITY, COMMUNICATION, AND
COLLABORATION?
 What were the strengths of the workshop?
 What were the weaknesses of the workshop?

assisting discovery."
