THE YOUNG NOAH AND ALLIE
THE OLD NOAH AND ALLIE
“The Notebook” is a romance movie based on the book by Nicholas Sparks. I
have never read one of his books, so I wasn’t sure what to expect with this movie. With
most romance movies you can expect a few tears, heartache, and a happy ending. I
wondered if this movie would fit those expectations.
The movie is set in the 1940’s when a teenage boy, named Noah, falls in love with
a rich girl, named Allie. The story is being told in present day by an older man named Duke
to an older woman in a rest home, whom they are both patients at. Duke reads this story of
the trials and heartache that this young couple faced. We find out through the story telling
that they fall in love, but soon Allie’s family takes her away in order to keep her from seeing
Noah. Noah writes her a letter every day and hopes for a response, but never gets it. After a
year of doing this he tries to move on and ends up joining the army. Once home he decides
to fix up an old house that he and Allie had explored and loved. We soon learn that Allie is
getting married, but ends up seeing Noah’s picture in the newspaper in front of that old
house. She ends up going to see him thinking that he never tried to contact her, but they end
up realizing that he did write her letters that she never received and they are still in love.
Most of the movie follows the
typical love story, they meet, they fall in love,
someone or something keeps them apart and
by the end they end up happily together. This
is what “The Notebook” is all about; the
different thing they throw in is that we soon
begin to realize that the old man and the old
woman in the nursing home are Noah and
Allie. Allie has Alzheimer’s and now her
husband reads her the story of their love each
day in hopes that she will remember. We end
up seeing that for a brief period her former
self returns and she remembers everything.
The happy moment doesn’t last long as she
slips back into her dementia and no longer
remembers him. She freaks out thinking a
stranger is in her room with her, by the end it
shows them passed away in her bed holding
                       hands.
This movie is a lot to take in and some might find it cheesy, but this movie truly is
a great romance. What makes this a great romance is we see two people from different
backgrounds that fell in love at a young age and after all odds and fights they find each other
in the end. This movie shows how two people in love deal’s with the ups and downs of the
Alzheimer’s disease. We see how much a couple loved each other for so long only to have the
memory of it taken away by Alzheimer’s. We get a glimpse of what it might be like for
someone that has it and for someone that cares for a person with Alzheimer’s. This glimpse
shows how her husband has to pretend to be someone else just to spend the day with her.
When her kids come to visit they pretend they don’t know her and are only there to visit him.
This shows how hard it is for a person’s family to go on living their lives even though the
person they love has no idea who they are anymore. This movie while it is a love story shows
the pain that families go through when the person they love no longer has any idea who they
are. When you look at this movie as a story of Alzheimer’s it shows a story of the great
memories that people lose with this horrible disease. The life they knew and loved is gone
once someone has Alzheimer’s. They don’t remember their family or loved ones and this
story shows the loving memories along with the pain the family endures as they are forgotten
by someone with Alzheimer’s. It is an epic love story that shows even in the end true love is
always by your side.
