Jonah is angry that God spared the people of Nineveh from destruction after they repented. He prays sarcastically for God to take his life. God appoints a plant to shade Jonah, but then a worm destroys it and a hot wind torments Jonah. God questions why Jonah cares for a simple plant but not the large city of Nineveh filled with people and animals. God explains that His great compassion should extend even to Nineveh if they repent, just as Jonah wanted the plant to be spared.
