The Source

By Jack Dawson
• The Source Magazine started off as a newsletter back in ‘88,

• The Source has documented everything Hip-Hop like none other, including
exclusive interviews in print, on television and online.

• The source have extended there reach and surpassed other magazines,
  with special Source music initiatives:
 The Hip-Hop Hits compilation,
 The well reknowned 5 Mic music rating system,
 Spit 16 – the unique program designed to expose unsigned artists,
 Producing the first-ever annual awards program centered on Hip-Hop, The
  Source Awards.
• The Source has been the leading international voice for the world of Hip-
Hop music, culture and politics for the past 20 years.

• The sources goal is to “cover every aspect of this unique and vibrant
culture–from the streets that spawn our increasingly creative music and
fashion to the power players that direct the boardrooms and make our
products into viable commodities and profitable investments”.

• The Source mainly has articles on main stream Hip-Hop, and news about
upcoming and current artists. The source will also have articles on politics
and sports. This allows them to reach a wider target audience
Some examples of products The Source does advertise are all independent
companies. Some examples of these companies are:
2 Dope Boyz
Hip Hop Ruckus
Hip Hop News 247

They might only advertise other independent companies as it want to
promote them and get more people interested and investing in independent
magazines other that major magazines, who are own by major companies. If
these major companies get too much money, it could have the monopoly
effect which would mean that, they control what content they put out. This
might be what The Source doesn’t want to happen.
XXL
• XXL is a Hip-Hop magazine, founded in 1997. it comments on everything Hip-Hop
and gives frequent updates on artist and there latest tracks/albums.

• XXL is published by Harris Publications, and is also part of the H360 group. Which
is a group that focuses on getting attention from the audience, it is also made to
“directly reach and impact our audience beyond traditional print media”.

• Harris Publications is the parent company for XXL, King and 0-60 (automotive
magazine) and many more. Harris Publications isn't purely focused on music
magazines. In fact it does many other genres:
• Lifestyle
• Comics
• Business
• Automotive
• Some examples of cross-media advertising on XXL’s website are ‘King’, ‘0-
60’ and ‘Rides’, all of these magazines are owned by Harris Publications.
They do this so that Harris Publications can get more money, seeing as if
the magazine they are advertising on is popular more people will check
  out the advertisements.

• Harris Publications, cross-media advertise so that they can get media
dominance or ‘the monopoly effect’, where they control practically the
magazine industry. This is because they have all types of magazine genres,
so if they cross-media advertise and people look at the other magazines,
Harris Publications will control so much and have so much money that
they can decide what to publish.
