can establish a few things about our audience

Most probably have an active lifestyle not necessarily
sporty.
Like to let loose at parties and frequently dating people.
Definitely a sense of pride and individuality in their
appearances; like to stand out in a crowd to attract mates.
Before we could began examining our audience we needed
to establish a few things.
We found 100 suited people
to our demographic and
psychographic ideas of our
audience and asked them 5
specific questions that
would give us insight to
their minds on their future
and current lifestyle. On the
answers they have given us
we can create a detailed
profile of our audience
(male and female)
 What are you planning
to do for your future?
 What are your passions
or hobbies?
 On a date to the cinema
what genre of movie
would you choose to
watch?
 What do you believe
makes a good/effective
thriller?
 Is establishing the genre
of a film important or
not?
Our results display clearly that there are three main ideas about our
audiences future. These three ideas are; go to university for a
degree of a chosen subject (31%), to carry on their apprenticeship
for a few years and become self employed (56%), and the final idea
was to take a gap year to decide what they want to do in life (13%).
This establishes that our audience are neither extensively
intelligent or unintelligent this leads us to believe that the majority
of our audience will be able to understand the slightly complicated
storylines of both our ideas (with the exception of a few anomalies
as our research is only on 100 people it is not wide enough to
assume a full understanding of our full audience). Furthermore
from the findings we have gathered we can keep our storylines
complex (like the unknown with Liam Neeson) however not too
complex (like Inception with Leonardo DiCaprio).
This question was designed to find out what our audiences interests are.
We surprisingly found out that they didn’t really find much interest in
anything! There was 4 main things they found an interest in. These things
were gaming (18%), dating (38%), working whether it be coursework or
paid work (24%) and finally partaking in a sporting activity (14%). The
remaining 10% were put in a category named ‘other’ as all 10% had a
different thing that interest them, things such as art, building and fashion.
However all these things together can make us assume that our audience
have a fairly active lifestyle (even the gamers as 10% preferred ‘kinect’
rather than sitting down and controlling). Yet not all of our audiences main
interest was dating, it was a common interest of 96% of our subjects.
Which means most of our audience would probably be having a date to
this movie. To conclude, we have to make our film relate to our audiences
with either sport or relationships, in addition to that we need to make our
film scary (to help out our young couples get closer to each other) yet
interesting enough for our audiences to stay and want to watch.
From the research so far we have established that our audience are keen to
go out with their partners. So this question was devised to see what genre
of movie they would take there partner to see. As our movie has to be
thriller, but we want to add aspects of another genre to grab a wider
audience and make it overall more interesting. The results from this
question came to an expected outcome. The majority of our audience said
they would take their date to a horror movie (67%), and in the words of
one of our subjects ‘so the jumpy bits in the film give me an excuse to get
closer to my man’. Which is clearly a valid excuse if I do say so. A further
20% said they would take their date to see a romantic film. 5% agreed on
taking their date to see a comedy. The remaining 7% said a range of
different genres. But 80% of our participants said that the movie needs a
thrilling edge to keep it interest, (the other 20% were the people who
picked romantic). Which can lead us to assume that our audience would
most prefer a hybrid genre of ‘horror’ and ‘thriller’; this in turn tells us
what we need to do with our movie to make it ‘jumpy’ and exciting for
them.
This question was to create and idea of what our subjects
understanding of media conventions were (this can not be a full
blown examination due to the lack of participants). We found
that some subjects thought that lighting was key to build the
tension of a thriller (44%). 31% believed that a thriller was
made good/effective by the climax’s and anti-climax’s. 21%
thought that the symbolic objects of the film made a good
thriller (the mise-en-scene). The remaining 4% didn’t know
what to say in response to the question. This can lead us to
believe that our audience (as tested) have a decent
understanding of how things work in the world of media. Which
infers that the audience are knowledgeable to the different ideas
about film genres, the answers give us the idea that we need to
be careful to make sure we use all the techniques correctly for
build ups.
This question although simple is quite crucial. It really shows us how
much out audience cares about the quality of a film is. The obvious
answer is ‘yes’ there is no doubt about it. 97% of our audience agreed
with us and answered yes. 58% explained why they gave yes; with the
common explanation being ‘you need to know what type of film you
are watching’. This intrigued us so we asked the 58% the question
‘what establishes a genre?’. To which almost all of them replied with
‘the setting’, ‘the props’ and one person said ‘the lighting’. Which
means the majority of our audience want to see a clear genre
established in the film. Yet the remaining 3% of people answered ‘no’;
all of these people are within the lowest age bracket (15-17) which can
allow us to infer that they are not to interested in the movie; they are
focusing more on who they are with. Which was even admitted by half
of the 3%.
All of these answers can lead us to believe that
our film needs to be suited to intelligent,
dating, young adults. This would appeal to the
majority of our audience. With our target
audience now analysed as much as possible we
can make the opening with all the key aspects
of a good media production within it.
