The Unborn 9 frame analysis
- 2. 1 This is a screen shot taking from the opening credits of unborn from the moment we see the company logo we instantly know the film is a horror based movie, due to the dark colours used and the transition used which makes the logo look as if it is shaking. The company is not very well known which could mean that this is a low budget movie with less famous actors within, which is often the case with horror films.
- 3. 2 In the first scene we are instantly aware of the horror genre that the film is portraying due to the setting, it looks like a quiet remote place, the perfect setting for a horror to take place. An establishing shot has also been used so we are immediately aware of the surroundings and setting. Also the low key lighting used and dark dull tones also give us the impression that this will be the setting for a horror storyline. The actual weather being cold and dull and the trees with dead branches in the distance could also link to this theme of horror.
- 4. 3 A second establishing shot from the opening sequence is of the city scape again informing us of our surroundings, we can tell that the film is set in in New York due to the city skyline we see. Again the use of low key lighting to enhance the theme of horror. We are also informed from this shot that this film will take place in the modern day and is not set during the past due to the skyline we see.
- 5. 4 The fourth shot shows a women jogging alone in the distance a long shot was used to put emphasis on th fact that she is alone it almost add atmosphere and suspense to the scene which is what is intended for a horror film. We can see the women is wearing dark clothing this again is linked to the theme of horror as black and dull colours are stereotypical for this particular genre of film. A lot of long shots are used within the opening and with horror films themselves to add emphasis on the character being alone and the likely hood of something happening to them.
- 6. 5 Within this scene we are introduced to a female character who is out jogging. I did notice some iconography within this shot i.e. the typical woodland setting whereby the majority of horror films take place, the fact that the women is out alone in a quite remote setting, there is also the fact that the women is young and the stereotypical women within a horror. The women is also centrally framed within this shot so we are sort of guessing she is the main character throughout or that something may happen to her.
- 7. 6 A pull focus is used within this shot as the women notices something laying in the middle of the road. The camera focusing in on the glove whilst blurring out the women walking towards it to show this is an important object as it could have a story behind it. Again the glove is a dark dull green no bright colours used as this would retract from the stereotypical horror genre.
- 8. 7 In this shot as the women picks up the glove and turns back round, an over the shoulder shot has been used in order to capture the figure of a young child who has suddenly appeared behind her. The clothes that the child is wearing could be classed as clothes from an earlier period in time, he seems to be wearing some sort of trench coat with a button up shirt and long boots, this might suggest to us that the boy is a sort of ghostly figure from the past.
- 9. 8 This shot shows a medium shot of the young boy, again suggesting to us that this boy is some sort of ghostly figure due to the typical costume and make up techniques used. He is very pale suggesting again this ghost image, his eyes also have no colours and have been made to look white it order to add a more scarier look to the boy, making the boy look scary and withdrawn again leads back to the horror genre as they are intended to be scary.
- 10. 9 Again we are amongst the woods in this shot the typical place for a horror to take place the shot shows the women kneeling on the ground picking up some sort of scary mask again another iconic object that it used within many horror films, scary masks seem to also have something to do with a killer ect.
