- 3. WHAT IS POLLUTION? • The term "pollution" refers to any substance that negatively impacts the environment or organisms that live within the affected environment. The five major types of pollution include: air pollution, water pollution, soil pollution, light pollution. • Over the years, Ghana has produced so much rubbish that it has become the main site of disease. • Everywhere you turn, there’s rubbish. There are so many gases in the air that it can choke you. Most of our water bodies are full of trash. We need to do something about all this rubbish build-up and FAST.
- 4. WHAT TECHNOLOGY CAN HELP STOP POLLUTION? • First of, what is technology? • Technology is the application of tools, materials and knowledge to solve problems and extend human capabilities. • Ok, now that that has been established, what types of technology can we use to stop pollution in Ghana?
- 5. 3 TYPES OF TECHNOLOGY THAT GHANA CAN USE TO HELP STOP POLLUTION • Gas to liquids: Shell has developed a new synthetic “gas to liquid” (GTL) fuel derived from natural gas which is a “drop in” replacement for diesel(i.e. the engine requires no modification). • Autonomous vehicles: A range of studies have estimated that autonomous vehicles could improve fuel efficiency by 15-40%, reducing emissions of local pollutants as well as greenhouse gases, not to mention the benefits in terms of safety and congestion.
- 6. • Air purification: Developers are also looking at other ways of cleaning air in urban environments. Studio Roosegarde, a Dutch design company, has developed the “Smog Free Tower” – an air purifying tower which sucks in pollution and expels clean air.

GOOD AND BAD EFFECTS OF TECHNOLOGY • There will always be good and bad effects of technology. even if the technology looks full proof, now flaws, nothing, nada. • But there will always be something, that little annoying thing that makes the technology have bad effects on the environment. • Sad, isn’t it?
- 8. GOOD EFFECTS • It helps making the environment clean easier and faster. • It makes transport easier. With autonomous vehicles you can sit back, relax and enjoy the trip. • It makes the environment a safer an healthier place to live. • It reduces death rate by eliminating a lot of the rubbish.

BAD EFFECTS • People depend too much on the technology Instead of actually trying to help make society better, people depend of technology to do everything. • If we depend too much on specific technology, who will think of new technology to replace the old one when the work becomes too much for it? • When the technology gets old and spoilt, it will be very difficult disposing of it due to not knowing how it will decompose or if it will explode. • It distracts you from seeing the big picture. Instead of looking for ways to help the environment, we’re looking at how great and efficient the technology is.

HOW HAS POLLUTION AFFECTED GHANA? • According to the figures from the WHO, about 203 out of every 100,000 deaths in Ghana are air pollution- related alone. • Most people get diseases from their own homes, just because of the piles and piles of rubbish around. People drink the dirty, polluted water, use it to cook and more. It’s getting out of hand. • Our gutters are filled with rubbish, causing colossal floods when the rains come.

THE SWEDEN SOLUTION • Sweden is not only saving money by replacing fossil fuel with waste to produce energy; it is generating 100 million USD annually by importing trash and recycling the waste produced by other countries. The United Kingdom, Norway, Ireland and Italy are willing to pay 43 USD for every tonne of waste that Sweden imports. • So why can’t Ghana do it? Why can’t we send our rubbish to Sweden too?
