The Giver Lois Lowry
Lois Lowry Lois Lowry was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, the middle child of three, but her father's career as a military officer caused the family to move to Pennsylvania and later to Japan. Lowry knew as a preschooler that she would be a writer, and her high school yearbook prediction, "future novelist," seemed to confirm her fate. She attended Brown University, married, raised four children, and graduated from the University of Maine before her career as a writer took hold. Lowry's novels have won two Newbery medals.   
Newberry Medal The Newberry Medal is awarded annually by the American Library Association for the most distinguished American children's book published the previous year  "To encourage original creative work in the field of books for children. To emphasize to the public that contributions to the literature for children deserve similar recognition to poetry, plays, or novels. To give those librarians, who make it their life work to serve children's reading interests, an opportunity to encourage good writing in this field."
Newberry Medal Interpretation of the theme or concept Presentation of information including accuracy, clarity, and organization Development of a plot Delineation of characters Delineation of a setting Appropriateness of style.
Utopia What is a utopia? often  Utopia  An ideally perfect place, especially in its social, political, and moral aspects.  Can this exist? What would the world be like if it did?
 
Chapter 1 Vocabulary Intrigued- 1. Arouse the curiosity or interest of; fascinate. 2. Make secret plans to do something illicit or detrimental to someone.  Obediently- Dutifully complying with the commands, orders, or instructions of one in authority
Chapter 1 Vocabulary Ironic- Poignantly contrary to what was expected or intended  Abandoned- Deserted; forsaken  Palpable- 1. Capable of being handled, touched, or felt; tangible 2. easily perceived; obvious  Distraught- Deeply agitated, as from emotional conflict
