- A clutch transmits power between the engine and transmission, allowing the engine to disengage from the transmission during gear changes. It consists of a flywheel, pressure plate, friction disc, and release mechanism.
- There are several types of clutches, including single plate clutches which use one clutch plate, and multi-plate clutches which use multiple alternating plates to transmit higher torque. Electromagnetic and centrifugal clutches also exist.
- A clutch works by using pressure from the pressure plate to engage the clutch plate between the flywheel and plate, transmitting power from the engine. Releasing the pressure plate disengages the clutch to allow gear changes.
