“web-based tools for
interaction
for conversation and
to create and share
content”= Meredith Gould

teachers, catechists, parents, and
students today:
 Network or communion?
 Creators or consumers?
 Freedom or responsibility?

Pope Francis
The goal of the Church for its communications
efforts is “to understand how to enter into
dialogue with the men and women of today in
order to appreciate their desires, their doubts
and their hopes.” September 21, 2013

How did Jesus communicate the Good News?
• Storytelling
• Conversations
• Question and answers
• Debate
• Dialogue
Think theologically about
social media

about God as well as God’s ongoing,
eternal communication with us”

social communications, as well as by
personal contact, the beauty that is at the
heart of our existence and our journey, the
beauty of faith and of our encounter with

Character
Sow a thought and you reap an action; sow an
act and you reap a habit; sow a habit and you
reap a character; sow a character and you reap
a destiny.”
– Ralph Waldo Emerson
Character
What you do when no one is looking
Empathy
“How would you feel if someone did that to
you?”
Character education = human formation
The spiritual is built upon the human
Values
Values are overarching ideals
that guide our lives
What are the three most
important values that guide
your life?
Share with the person next to you
What are Jesus’ family values?
• To feed the hungry
• To give drink to the thirsty
• To clothe the naked
• To give shelter to the homeless
• To visit the sick
• To ransom the captive
• To bury the dead.
More of Jesus’ family values
• The spiritual works of mercy
• To instruct the ignorant
• To counsel the doubtful
• To admonish sinners
• To bear wrongs patiently
• To forgive offences willingly
• To comfort the afflicted
• To pray for the living and the dead
Remember why we are
even talking about all this:
Kids need human
formation to base the
spiritual
Kids’ brains, the frontal cortex
where consequences are considered
and decisions are made
is not developed until they are in their 20s –
boys almost 30.
Parenting – the Church’s most
important apostolate
Our children need
 Communication
 Consistency
 Guidance
 Good example
 Communication
 Honor
 Respect
 Communication
Control lasts for a moment
Communication lasts a
lifetime
Goals of Catholic
formation & education
Critical autonomy
Independent thinkers
Empathetic people
Who participate in society
Responsible and free
Collaborators who care about people, society, environment

Questions?
Let us remember that the
world is permeated by
grace even when it does
not seem so
(cf. Karl Rahner)
Christ Has No Online Presence but Yours
• Christ has no online presence but yours,
• No blog, no Facebook page but yours,
• Yours are the tweets through which love touches this world,
• Yours are the posts through which the Gospel is shared,
• Yours are the updates through which hope is revealed.
• Christ has no online presence but yours,
• No blog, no Facebook page but yours.

Editor's Notes

  • #2: We’re going to have fun, I hope … but we are considering serious important and challenging issues in an enjoyable way …
  • #4: What do you want to do before you did video
  • #5: Katty Perry Video “Roar”
  • #6: Is Social Media necessary? Did you know?Do we need to be on social media?
  • #7: What being on social media can look like
  • #9: These questions will frame this presentation – and it is both/and
  • #10: Our world is so connected to technology….explainCan we link faith and life using social media? Our digital lives are no different from our actual ones. And as one archbishop said after Pope Benedict XVI joined Twitter in December, social media is not “a parallel or purely virtual world,” but a real, tangible part of modern life. The whole point of social media is that it has effects in the physical world.
  • #16: What connects all Christians as far as “belief goes”? The Apostles CreedWho is God for you?And what response does this call forth from me in a constantly changing, mediated, digital world – as we relate to this reality
  • #17: Church is communication. Define God=Trinity relationship of Father, Son and Spirit is Agape (in constant communication). We are made in the image of God. We are made to be in relationship just as the Trinity. Church says that Media are gifts of God. How do we use them? A community of love
  • #18: The Church’s support for the integration of communication technology began even before the internet Decree on the Media of Social Communications “Inter Mirifica” Solemnly promulgated by His Holiness Pope Paul VI on December 4, 1963All the Popes since 1937 “Media are gifts of God” even if only referring to cinemaHow do we interact with media we experience?
  • #19: "Church communities have always used the modern media for fostering communication, engagement with society, and, increasingly, for encouraging dialogue at a wider level.  Yet the recent, explosive growth and greater social impact of these media make them all the more important for a fruitful priestly ministry," Pope Benedict XVI said in his January message for the 44th World Day of Communications.  Pope Benedict XVI is a social media advocate and is the first pope to have his own YouTube and Facebook accounts.  Despite the indication in my catchy paragraph heading, he has no Twitter account.  He advocates for the use of social media to communicate the Gospel message to a younger audience and those that are increasingly tech-savvy.  Social media “can reinforce the bonds of unity between individuals and effectively promote the harmony of the human family.” Pope Benedict XVI from World Communications Day #47
  • #21: Bridge the divide of the internet with everyday faith. Virtual community is real community. It was were more and more people have conversations on faith, spirituality, relationships and Church. Online communities rely on them for inspiration and support.Social media are conversations of real people supported by online tools.
  • #24: The medium is the message as McLuhan stated … the storytellers were the “medium”
  • #25: Is there a place for the Bible in the digital era? We’ve seen the Bible in the movies and on television …So How?
  • #27: Character is first taught in the homeThose first five years are pivotalParents … the role of parents in the human formation of the child cannot be understatedYou want responsible use of social media? Starts with character, not rules – though rules are part of it.
  • #28: We have to be able to articulate our valuesWe have the Creed, the articulation of our faith, of our way of understanding God, the Trinity, Jesus, the Scriptures, virtueBut what are the human values that guide our lives?Take a few moments and jot down those valuesShare among yourselves those values that you have internalized, that have become habits for you, even virtues (habits of doing good)CommunityParticipationFamilyIntegrityHonesty
  • #29: Yes, age appropriate media but the Gospels ground us in the spiritual and corporal works of mercy as the launch pad for being Christians in the modern worldGood character – good human formationHonestyIntegrityEmpathy Good criteria for interacting with all media: Jesus family values (not only content)Then Christian …
  • #31: We want kids to be critically autonomous but it comes from formation in the family first of all
  • #34: Motivate your decisions; it cannotb e “not in my house you don’t”
  • #36: How to navigate so as to cross the bridge and link faith with media experience?...T.H.I.N.K.
  • #41: Awareness test: media point our attention in one direction and we can miss the layers(But is this a pro-social message?)
  • #42: Analyze the Awareness Test
  • #43: Coke Commercial South AfricaAnalyze: what’s going on? Nice stories of kindnessWhat’s really going on? Selling coke by creating warm fuzzy positive feelingsDos it make a difference? Money to Coke and perhaps illness (diabetics and obesity) to usHow can I make a difference? Talk about the commercial, ask your friends and family what they theink it means …be aware; choose alternative beverages
  • #47: The North American House HippoAll media are constructions; test and verify
  • #48: VMA AwardsMiley Cyrus “twerking”Girl twerking catches on fire (fake news story that CNN and Fox news aired as real newsJimmy Kimmel calls out media for not checking facts – he and his comic team made the video and posted it as real and the big news corporations believed it – no one verified
  • #49: The Middle clip….Brick discovers the internet
  • #50: Katy Perry sings with girl with autism
  • #52: Homeless manIs it pro-social?
  • #53: Bullying is a bigger problem on social media than porn
  • #56: Questions?Video of St Terea’s prayer
