- 10. The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and the money changers seated at their tables. Making a whip of cords, he drove all of them out of the temple, both the sheep and the cattle. He also poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. He told those who were selling the doves, “Take these things out of here! Stop making my Father’s house a marketplace!” His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.” John 2:13-17 (Psalm 69:9)
- 11. Then Jesus entered the temple and drove out all who were selling and buying in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves. He said to them, “It is written: ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer’; but you are making it a den of robbers.” Matthew 21:12-13 (Isaiah 56:7; Jeremiah 7:11)

The Jews then said to him, “What sign can you show us (to prove your authority) for doing this?” Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” The Jews then said, “This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and will you raise it up in three days?” But he was speaking of the temple of his body. After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this; and they believed the scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken. John 2:18-22

- 16. HOW Did Jesus Cleanse the Temple? WHAT THE TEXT SAYS - Jesus saw the condition of the Temple; (its safe to infer this made him angry) - Jesus made a whip to drive out animals (made out of rope, not leather/stone) - Jesus turned over tables and poured out the money changers coins
- 17. HOW Did Jesus Cleanse the Temple? WHAT THE TEXT DOESN’T SAY - Jesus demonstrated rage/violence (inferred anger ≠ rage/violence) - Jesus was out of control (nothing indicates he snapped/lost it) - Jesus acted spontaneously, off-the-cuff (think “street theater” or “protest”)
