Editor's Notes

  • #3: United Technologies is the world’s leading provider of high-technology systems and services for the aerospace and building industries.   We invent new and better ways to keep people safe, comfortable, productive and on the move. By combining a passion for science with precision engineering, we create the smart, sustainable solutions the world needs.   [Pictured: Hong Kong, China]
  • #4: Our commercial building systems brands include Otis elevators, Carrier air conditioning, and Chubb and Kidde fire & security systems.   Our aerospace brands include Pratt & Whitney aircraft engines, Goodrich and Hamilton Sundstrand aerospace systems.   Many of our businesses were founded by pioneers whose innovations led to the creation of entire industries.   For example: Elisha Otis invented the first elevator with safety brakes Willis Carrier invented modern air conditioning Jeremiah and Charles Chubb patented the world’s first detector lock Pratt & Whitney founder Frederick Rentschler invented the air-cooled aircraft engine   A continuing commitment to innovation is one of the many things that makes UTC a global leader … [Pictured: Bangkok]
  • #5: UTC is ranked 45 in the Fortune 100 with more than $57 billion in sales.   These sales are balanced across our markets and geographies in 2016.   50% of our revenues were generated by our commercial & industrial building systems businesses. 50% were generated by our aerospace businesses—including 38% from our commercial customers and 12% from our military and space customers.   A strength of our business model is the significant recurring revenues from our aftermarket and service businesses—which accounted for 46% of total revenues in 2016.   Our sales also are geographically distributed, with more than 60% generated outside the United States, including 20% from fast-growing emerging markets.   UTC is well positioned for future growth … [Pictured: Riyadh, Saudi Arabia]
  • #6: We operate at the intersection of powerful megatrends that are transforming the global economy: urbanization and the rapidly growing middle class.   Around the world, more than 1 million people a week are moving to cities; this means 5 billion people will be living in urban areas by 2030. As people move from farms to cities and improve their quality of life, they’ll want the comfort and security of a modern lifestyle—apartments with air conditioning and fire and security systems in buildings with elevators. This will drive the demand for more skyscrapers, schools and hospitals as well as airports that connect cities for commerce and recreation. United Technologies is well positioned to take advantage of the growth opportunities created by these megatrends—as customers demand high-efficiency, high-technology products that provide greater value. At the same time, we recognize that we are entrusted with some of the world’s most important missions ... [Pictured: New York City]
  • #7: The products we make keep people safe, secure and comfortable at work, at home, in their travels. And we support our military customers by ensuring our warfighters have the most advanced and reliable equipment and technology to protect freedom around the world. Of course, nothing we do would be possible without our talented employees …
  • #8: Our companies employ more than 200,000 people around the world. We believe our high-performance culture attracts the best people in their fields—people of diverse backgrounds—who want to work together to solve complex problems.   We seek to identify and nurture future leaders through development programs in fields that include finance, engineering, operations, information technology, human resources and communications. We also offer exciting career opportunities in a number of growing fields such as complex engineering and advanced manufacturing. In addition to exciting career opportunities, we are able to attract and retain the best employees with our a strong ethical culture and our commitment to sustainability and corporate responsibility …
  • #9: At UTC, we believe that corporate responsibility and financial performance go hand in hand.   This means we encourage and celebrate employee volunteerism and partner with leading nonprofit organizations focused on building sustainable cities; inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers; honoring veterans and military families; and improving the communities where we live and work.   We also understand the importance of maintaining the highest ethical standards, and we expect high performance with high integrity throughout the company.   Our Code of Ethics applies everywhere we do business and provides a framework to help employees make the right decision in any situation. Now turning to our business units …
  • #10: More than 160 years ago, Elisha Otis unveiled what he called the “safety hoist,” the first elevator equipped with an automatic safety device to prevent it from falling if the lifting chain or rope broke. His invention launched an entire industry and made the modern city possible.   In addition to new equipment, Otis provides modernization products to upgrade elevators and escalators as well as maintenance and repair services for both its products and those of other manufacturers. The company serves customers in the commercial and residential property industries around the world. Otis is working on new digital tools and technologies that will transform its elevator service network and enable greater connectivity with customers. In 2016 Otis began equipping its 31,000 mechanics with sophisticated digital tools and applications that will use big data to drive condition-based monitoring and maintenance. Otis and UTC Climate, Controls & Security are exploring other opportunities to develop digital solutions for integrated, smart building equipment.   Otis employs nearly 67,000 people worldwide.
  • #11: UTC Climate, Controls & Security is committed to driving a future enabled by intelligent products, connected systems and integrated buildings.   Through innovation and integration, the organization brings together technologies from across its brands to improve building efficiency and occupant experience:   Carrier’s innovative heating and cooling solutions have enabled entire industries and opened up regions for development by improving comfort, productivity and efficiency.   Respected brands like Chubb, Kidde, Edwards and Lenel provide innovative fire safety and electronic security solutions that protect people, property and assets around the globe.   Carrier Transicold also provides a range of solutions for the transportation, food retail and food service industries designed to help ensure the freshness, quality, safety and appearance of perishables. UTC Climate, Controls & Security employs ~56,000 people worldwide.
  • #12: Pratt & Whitney is a world leader in the design, manufacture and service of aircraft engines and auxiliary power units. The company is entering a period of major growth driven by demand for its PurePower® Geared Turbofan™ engine family and the F135 engine that powers the F-35 Lightning II, which will be operated by the U.S. military and 11 additional countries. The Pratt & Whitney Geared Turbofan engine is transforming the aviation industry. The Geared Turbofan engine has more than 80 customers in 30 countries. In-service performance of the Geared Turbofan engine has demonstrated its promised ability to reduce fuel burn by 16 percent, regulated emissions by 50 percent and noise footprint by 75 percent since entry into service in early 2016. Pratt & Whitney companies employ more than 35,000 people worldwide.   [Pictured: Pratt & Whitney’s newest commercial engine—the revolutionary PurePower Geared Turbofan™ engine.]
  • #13: UTC Aerospace Systems is one of the world’s largest suppliers of advanced aerospace products for commercial , military and space customers. UTC Aerospace Systems is on virtually every aircraft in service and is well-positioned to support the extraordinary growth forecast for the commercial aviation industry. During the year its advanced systems enabled the first flights of the Embraer E2, the Boeing 737 MAX and the Gulfstream G600 as well as the entry into service of the Airbus A320neo and the Bombardier C Series. UTC Aerospace Systems employs nearly 41,000 people worldwide. [Pictured: left to right – Boeing 787 thrust reverser repair in Singapore; Airbus A350 XWB Sensor Suite; Airbus A380 landing gear manufacturing in Oakville, Canada; ACES 5™ Ejection Seat testing in Hurricane Mesa, Utah]
  • #14: From the world’s most fuel-efficient jet engines and sustainable aerospace components, to leading green building technologies that save energy, to refrigeration innovations that extend the world’s food supply to feed a growing population, United Technologies continues to deliver solutions the world needs to urbanize in a sustainable manner. We engage with stakeholders to advance sustainable outcomes across our global communities. Within our own operations, we tripled our revenues over the past 20 years while reducing our greenhouse gas emissions by 34 percent and water consumption 60 percent. For us, sustainability means we can do good for the planet while we do good for our employees, communities, customers and shareowners. [Pictured: Ping’An Finance Center, Shenzhen, China; Pratt & Whitney’s PurePower PW1000G engine; Solar Panels at the UTC Aerospace Systems site in Banbury, UK]
  • #15: Our company has been a leading voice in sustainability for nearly three decades. Every five years we set aggressive new sustainability goals for our environment, health and safety performance. We then track and report our progress on a quarterly basis. We surpassed our 2016 environmental goals and made progress toward our health, safety and compliance goals. Sustainability goals have had a significant impact on UTC over the years. In the last 20 years alone, UTC has cut its water usage by more than half, and greenhouse gas emissions by more than a third in absolute terms–even as the company's sales tripled. This latest program targets a 25 percent reduction in water usage and 15 percent reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from current levels over the next five years. It also extends sustainability incentives to UTC's supply chain and places the company on track for an 80 percent reduction in GHG emissions by 2050, in line with United Nations targets. We also focus on the well-being of our employees by investing in the tools, processes and training necessary for them to do their jobs safely, in a healthy work environment.
  • #16: At UTC, innovation, performance and sustainability drive our commitment to corporate responsibility. By focusing on our people, our communities and our planet, our world-class sustainability program helps to define our future.   We are committed to improving the quality of life everywhere we do business. Our partnerships with leading non-profit organizations in science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) and sustainability are inspiring the next generation of innovation and business leaders.   These commitments are supported by the impact that UTC employees have in our communities. Whether teaching lessons in sustainability or mentoring high school robotics students, our employees bring their expertise, creativity and passion to classrooms and community groups around the globe.   At UTC we are making things better.
  • #17: We take pride in being known as a company that sets big goals and delivers big results. We do this by having a highly educated, engaged and motivated workforce. The Employee Scholar Program helps make that possible. In 2016 we celebrated the 20th anniversary of the ESP, a program that has been recognized by educators and media for its generosity—but more important for its focus on helping employees stay abreast of their current field or develop skills in new ones. In today’s highly competitive business environment, it is essential that we have a workforce that can adapt quickly and recognize the opportunities that a changing business environment brings. By encouraging lifelong learning—and helping employees achieve it—we build a high-performance culture that is never satisfied with the status quo and is always looking for ways to improve. That is the essence of UTC’s success.
  • #18: In addition to its businesses, UTC operates a central research organization that pursues technologies to improve the performance, energy efficiency and cost of UTC products and processes. The United Technologies Research Center serves as the company’s innovation hub supporting the development of new technologies and facilitating the transfer of technology, capabilities and solutions for next-generation building and aerospace systems across the company. In 2016, UTC spent $3.7 billion on research and development, an investment that includes both company- and customer-funded activities.
