They also captured sculptors and brought them to Rome as slaves.”  “ The Romans were far more realistic than the Greeks with their statues.”   “ The Romans were also great admirers of Greek culture and art.” “ Roman art is generally defined as much more than the art of the city of Rome; rather, it is the art of Roman civilization from Romulus to the Emperor Constantine, and covers a period of more than 1,000 years.” Roman Era
“ The original purpose of a gargoyle was to drain water away from the sides of a building.”  “ The fall of the Roman Empire brought in the age of a new power, that of the Christian Church.”  “ The animal style is the artwork created by Northern nomadic peoples of ancient and medieval Europe.”  “ The Middle Ages suffered from a lack of technical knowledge which the Romans had previously achieved.”  The gothic period marks the highest point of Medieval art  Medieval Era
Renaissance Era The word Renaissance is a French word meaning new birth  The Renaissance Era Was a Time of Knowledge Humanism arose  art reflected back to the classical time of Rome and Greece.   Leonardo DaVinici painted the Mona Lisa during this time.  One of the major influences in the Renaissance was the change in the social structure of Europe at this time
Baroque Era “ Caravaggio and  Annibale Carracci are the two great figures who stand at the head of the Baroque tradition.”  “ The Baroque style used exaggerated motion and clear, easily interpreted detail to produce drama, tension, exuberance, and grandeur.”  “ The popularity and success of the "Baroque" was encouraged by the  Roman Catholic Church.” The word  baroque  derives from the ancient Portuguese noun "barroco" which is a pearl that is not round but of unpredictable and elaborate shape  Typical Instruments: Baroque violin Viola d’ amore  Viola de gamba  Harpischord Baroque oboe  Baroque trumpet Lute  Pipe organ
Eighteenth Century The eighteenth century in Europe is often called a time of Enlightenment  Important People:  Johann Bach Composer Pierre Beaumarchais French Writer François Boucher   French painter Thomas Gainsborough English painter A common belief during the 18th century was that blacks were savage and dangerous   Britain in the Eighteenth Century witnessed a period of unprecedented prosperity   In 1715 the French greeted a new king for the first time in seventy-two years. Louis XV, a boy only five years old
Romanticism was the attitude or intellectual orientation that characterized many works of literature, painting, music, architecture, criticism, and historiography in Western civilization during the 19th century.  19th Century Realism  rejects imaginative idealization in favor of a close observation of outward appearances. Lithographs The 19th century was marked by a number of distinctive compositional styles and forms. Many of these began during the Classical period but major revisions and new standards were applied by the composers of the Romantic era. The emerging aesthetics of the period remain popular and are held to by many modern composers. The symphony and opera are two excellent examples of this.
Expressionism - any art that raises subjective feelings above objective observations. The paintings aim to reflect the artists' state of mind rather than the reality of the external world.  Modern Art Art Nouveau  (the new art) became the first popular 20th-century style   Art Nouveau style cast iron decor The Solomon R. Guggenheim, planned by Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959), broke away from the dictates of the trends of modern architectural movements and represented the most poetically linked of all his works.  A revolution occurred in 20th century music listening as the radio gained popularity worldwide  Modern art is a new approach to art where it was no longer important to represent a subject realistically
Contemporary Art Art from the 1960's or 70's up until this very minute.   Photography, Painting,  Printmaking,  Music of every  Single genre possible,  and stone sculptures It is not yet possible at the time of inception to know its place in history. It is not yet possible to know its significance
