DesignWipe: Digital design trends to look out for in 2017
DesignWipe
A look back at the design trends

of 2016 and anticipating what

the future holds
TINNOVATION
Our digital design trends

to watch out for…
UX comes of age
1
T
• Testing, reiterating and learning

have become even more important
•Interest in the field this year has

grown massively
•Aesthetic decisions should be rooted

in what will help the user
•The user is at the heart of everything -

and UX is at the heart of all the emerging

trends this past year
UX comes of age
2
Prototyping
T
• Ideal for testing and realising visions

for clients before build
•Over 30 different prototyping tools

launched in the last few years
•Allows designers to have a greater
understanding of what’s possible in
development
•Rooted in UX - design prototypes allow

the designer to consider how it will ‘feel’

for the user, rather than just how it looks

Real content is king
T
• Designing with real data - goodbye

Lorem Ipsum and placeholder images?
•The designer builds empathy for how

users will actually experience things

in a variety of contexts
•Letting that content inform the

design process
•More focus on well-written copy

stand out visuals, and an understanding

of the size and type of this content
Real content is king
“Designers often fill their mocks with idealised information that is anything but
representative. Beautifully composed photos. Perfectly sized bits of text. Just the
right amount of content to fit…we are then surprised when our designs are
implemented because we forgot to solve a variety of edge cases and problems.
When we don’t work with real data, we deceive ourselves.”
Josh Puckett, Principal designer at Wealthfront
4
Death of the hamburger
• We’ll start to see hamburgers being

methodically replaced with tab bars,

Priority+ menus, and other alternative

forms of navigation
•Users are missing out on content they

can’t find
•Hidden navigation alienates users
• Spotify reported a 30% increase in

engagement when they ditched the

hamburger from their interface
Death of the hamburger
5
Bold and original aesthetic content
•Dramatic typography
•Original photography - goodbye stock
images!
•Bold, vibrant colours
•Hero video content
•Bespoke illustrations
•Unique animations and interactions
Bold and original aesthetic content
6
Design standards in AR, VR and MR
•VR was the big tech trend of the year -
but design standards in the medium are
still being worked out…
•AR and MR are making more use of the
literal, physical space around us which
will mean a rise in real architectural
changes
•TheTin has been experimenting with the
dos and don’ts of designing in VR which
will help us define future standards
AR, VR and MR
7
The return of skeuomorphism
•Flat design evolved into Material
design as users became used to
the mobile experience
•But with the rise of VR, creating
spaces that ‘feel’ real is becoming
more important - creating
environments rather than flat
interfaces will be key
•A hybrid of material design and

skeuomorphism will be on the
horizon…
The return of skeuomorphism
“Material Design will find that its brought pen and
paper to a gun fight — its fundamental architecture
is totally unequipped to handle the robust and
multi-dimensional web of tomorrow.”
Chase Buckley, UX/UI Designer & Front-end Developer
8
Chat bots and more intelligent AI
• Chat bots have been on the rise in the
e-commerce industry, minimising the
gap between consumers and brands
•More intelligent AI = more seamless

personalisation
•Various tools have popped up to help
non-coders make their own bots, so
we’re likely to see tons more of these
over the coming years
•Still issues to tackle - with words
themselves as the UI, what will
designers be designing?
Chat bots and AI
9
‘Moments of wonder’
• Tamagotchi gestures
•‘Sunset moments’ (off-boarding)
•‘Hapnotic’ feedback
•Reduced interstitial anxiety
• With UI kits becoming the norm,
designers will have more time to focus
on the ‘little delights’ that make a
website memorable…
•Meaningful animation
‘Moments of wonder’
10
Ethics and design
•Migration From Design Evangelism to

Design Proselytism…
•Simple UI interactions should require

fare more thought for inclusivity and
accessibility
•Generation of designers coming up
who want their work to be meaningful
- who want agencies to stand for
something and work with clients that
reflect their values
•Climate change will mean the rise of
weather apps this year
•Designers have a responsibility in
shaping the world around them -
including, of course, the digital world
Ethics and design
Watch out for these trends

and more in 2017!
