The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a complex joint that connects the mandible to the temporal bone. It is made up of two joints, the lower hinge joint and upper gliding joint, separated by an articular disc. A variety of muscles control mandibular movement including opening, closing, protrusion, and lateral deviation. Dysfunctions like inflammation, disc displacement, and degeneration can cause TMJ pain and limited movement. The TMJ is closely related to cervical spine and respiratory function, and dental occlusion impacts joint mechanics.
