5. The missing question?
WHY NOT USE BIRTH CONTROL?
"Eight years ago [in 2001], the Alan Guttmacher
Institute surveyed over 10,000 American women who
had abortions. Nearly half said they hadn’t used birth
control in the month they conceived. When asked
why not, 8 percent cited financial problems, and 2
percent said they didn’t know where to get it. By
comparison, 28 percent said they had thought they
wouldn’t get pregnant, 26 percent said they hadn’t
expected to have sex and 23 percent said they had
never thought about using birth control, had never
gotten around to it or had stopped using it. Ten
percent said their partners had objected to it. Three
percent said they had thought it would make sex less
fun.”
TEEN PREGNANCY
OUTCOMES:
Nearly a third of all teen
pregnancies end in abortion:
CONCLUSION:
“This isn’t a shortage of pills or condoms. It’s
a shortage of cultural and personal
responsibility. It’s a failure to teach,
understand, admit or care that unprotected
sex can lead to the creation — and the
subsequent killing, through abortion — of
a developing human being."
by William Saletan
OOOPS! WHAT HAPPENED?
 50% of all pregnancies are
unplanned! Most mothers sort of
stumble into motherhood!
Fifty years after introduction of birth
control pill, about half of all pregnancies
in the U.S. are unintended and 22% of
82% of teen pregnancies unplanned! pregnancies end in abortion.!
TEEN SEX: INNOCENCE LOST!
 How to delve into this delicate, adult
territory… How does this work in
America of today?
TEEN PREGNANCY IN AMERICA
• High for industrialized
world
– Some 1 million American
teenagers get pregnant
each year!
• Different for various
classes and ethnicities
• Hampered future
– Huge responsibility!
“It's really, really hard. I've got to get up
with him during the night, then get up
early for school. My mother watches the
baby during the day. But in the evening,
I've got to do my homework, feed him, give
him a bath, get him to sleep and get
myself ready for the next day.”
RECENT PREGNANCY TRENDS:
• Beginning to rise again!
RECENT PREGNANCY TRENDS:
• Locally here in
Ventura and
California!
SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES
AMONG TEENAGE GIRLS
• 2008 study shows that 1 in 4
American teen girls has an STD!
– HPV virus that causes cervical
cancer is by far the most
common sexually transmitted
infection in girls age 14 to 19.
"Those numbers are certainly alarming,"
said sex education expert Nora Gelperin,
who works with a teen-written Web site
called sexetc.org. She said they reflect "the
sad state of sex education in our country.“
"Sexuality is still a very taboo subject in our
society," she said. "Teens tell us that they
can't make decisions in the dark and that
adults aren't properly preparing them to
make responsible decisions."
FULL SEX EDUCATION
• A political decision made by school
districts
– Birth control explained,
demonstrated, and distributed to
students
• Relatively rare, politically delicate
decision
– In giving information, is the school
condoning premarital sex among
teens?
• Is this instruction the role of
parents, not schools?
– Sexuality and love a private family
matter that speaks to very personal
ethics, often religious
• It is not the business of teachers
and schools!
FULL SEX EDUCATION
 Instruction in how to use birth control
and distribution of contraceptives.
CONFLICTING VALUES AND OPINIONS!
A DELICATE POLITICAL QUESTION:
Encouraging “sin” and premarital sex? Or merely
acknowledging reality and giving teens tools to
keep themselves safe?
“SEX EDUCATION IS BIRTH CONTROL!”
FACT: Countries with more access to birth
control for teens and greater openness with
regards to sex have lower pregnancy and
STD rates.
THE MIDDLE GROUND
• Information about
pregnancy and STDS given.
– Narrowly proscribed
curriculum
– No birth control distributed in
the schools
– Avoidance of questions of love
or relationships
• This is what Ventura Unified
does
– Nurse Mary!
– The facts, and then question
and answer session
– What she does not do….
“ABSTINENCE ONLY”
• Religious background
– Importance of keeping sexual
activity between married man
and woman
– Degradation of sacred sexuality
by consumerism and
entertainment
• “Virginity pledge,” “Purity
ball,” “Silver Ring Thing,”
etc
“True love waits!”
SCARE TACTICS!
 Gonorrhea is otherwise known as
“the clap” or “the drip”…
SCARE TACTICS!
 “You will get pregnant, STD, etc. etc –
so just don’t do it!”
STD REALITY:
 Rates are
going up in
recent years!
“TRUE LOVE WAITS!”
SEX IN MARRIAGE; LOVE, NOT LUST!
 Imposition of religious/philosophical
position on those who do not share it?
…June 16, 2008
letter to the
Ventura County Star
THE MISSING QUESTION HERE?
What about LOVE, the SPIRIT, in sex and young adults just
learning about INTIMACY?
 Is Romeo and Juliet the closest we come at
FTHS to talking what about what is so often on
the minds of teens? Why is this?
ONE FINAL QUESTION…
… isn’t this the job of parents?
