LANs connect computers and devices within a small area like a home or office building using cables or wireless. A WAN connects buildings over larger distances like between cities. An example given is connecting 4 computers in a house via wireless to share a printer. LANs provide quick file sharing and email between connected devices while WANs allow this over a larger geographic area. Both have advantages of sharing resources but installing and maintaining the networks requires administrative time and costs.
