Samuel Colt was an American inventor born in 1814 who invented the revolver pistol. As a young man, he became interested in mechanics and disassembling devices to understand how they worked. While sailing to India, he came up with the idea for a revolving pistol and carved the first model on the ship. His early business ventures producing firearms and underwater mines failed, but orders from the Texas Rangers during the Mexican-American War expanded his business rapidly. By employing effective marketing strategies like art and educational programs, Colt became one of the wealthiest men in America and his company produced over 400,000 pistols before his death in 1862.
