Secretary Tommy Thompson gave a presentation on the current state of health care in the United States. He noted that health care has never been more uncertain and discussed some of the key issues facing the system, including chronic disease, waste, and a lack of outcome-based care. Specifically, he pointed out that chronic diseases like obesity account for 75% of health care costs. Additionally, the current payment system is highly fragmented and complex, similar to the outdated financial system of the 1960s, and this contributes to inefficiency and waste. A more coordinated payment network, like those used in the financial industry today, could help address some of the challenges facing health care.
