USER CENTERED DESIGN
.
User-centric design, also known as user-centered design (UCD),
is a design approach that prioritizes the needs, preferences,
and behaviors of users throughout the design process.
It is an iterative design process framework that incorporates
validation from the user every step of the way.
Step 1. Identify the users’ needs and the context around them.
Step 2. Specify requirements for both the business and user.
Step 3. Design solutions
Step 4. Evaluate
PHASES OF USER CENTERED DESIGN
.
USER CENTERED DESIGN - MERITS
.
1. Enhanced User Satisfaction: By focusing on users' needs and
preferences, user-centric design leads to products that are more
likely to meet their expectations and provide a positive
experience. This, in turn, enhances user satisfaction and
encourages loyalty.
Example: Consider the redesign of the Airbnb website and
mobile app. Through extensive user research and testing, Airbnb
revamped its platform to make it easier for users to find
accommodations that match their preferences. The result was
an increase in user satisfaction and engagement, leading to
improved retention rates and business growth.

.
2. Reduced Friction and Errors: User-centric design aims to
minimize confusion and errors by designing intuitive interfaces
and workflows that align with users' mental models. This reduces
the likelihood of users encountering obstacles or making
mistakes while interacting with the product.
Example: The redesign of the Google Maps app focused on
simplifying navigation and improving usability. By
prioritizing commonly used features and streamlining the
interface, Google reduced the cognitive load on users and
minimized the risk of navigation errors, leading to a smoother
and more efficient user experience.
USER CENTERED DESIGN
.
3. Increased Usability and Accessibility: User-centric design
emphasizes accessibility and inclusivity, ensuring that products
are usable by a diverse range of users, including those with
disabilities. By considering accessibility requirements from the
outset, designers can create experiences that are more equitable
and usable for everyone.
Example: The redesign of the Microsoft Office suite incorporated
accessibility features such as screen reader compatibility,
keyboard shortcuts, and customizable display settings. These
enhancements made Office products more accessible to users with
disabilities
USER CENTERED DESIGN
.
4. Better Alignment with Business Goals: Contrary to the
misconception that user-centric design conflicts with business
objectives, prioritizing user needs often leads to better business
outcomes. By understanding users' pain points and motivations,
companies can develop products and services that address real-world
problems and deliver tangible value.
Example: Amazon's relentless focus on customer experience has been a
key driver of its success. By gathering and analyzing customer
feedback, Amazon continuously refines its website and services to
better meet user needs. This user-centric approach has contributed to
Amazon's reputation for customer satisfaction and its position as a
market leader in e-commerce.
USER CENTERED DESIGN
.
 Reduced Development Costs: Addressing usability issues early in
the design process reduces costly redesigns and fixes after product
launch.
 Competitive Advantage: Companies that focus on UCD can
differentiate themselves from competitors by offering superior user
experiences.
 Customer Retention: A well-designed, user-friendly product
encourages repeat use, fostering long-term relationships with
customers.
 Positive Impact on Brand Image: A focus on user experience can
lead to positive word-of-mouth and brand loyalty, improving the
overall reputation of the company.
