What is Touchscreen ?

A display which can detect the presence and
location of a touch within the display area.
INTRODUCTION
 In 1974, the first touch screen developed by
    Sam Hurst and Elographics.

 The HP-150 from 1983 was probably the
    world's earliest commercial touchscreen
    computer.

 Now days, Multipoint touchscreen facilitates
the tracking of more than one finger on the
    screen.
How Does a
  Touchscreen Work?

 1. Touch Sensor

   2. Controller

3. Software Driver
1. Touchsensor
2. Controller

          A small PC card
          which translates
        information that PC
          can understand.
3. Software Driver

          Driver allows to
         work with existing
             software.
Technologies

1. Resistive

  2. Infrared

     3. Capacitive

        4. Surface acoustic wave
1.Resistive
              • A resistive
                touchscreen panel is
                composed of several
                layers.
              • It consists of a glass
                that is coated with
                electrically
                conductive and
                resistive layers.
Advantages of resistive touch
 screen technology…..
Lower cost.
Can operate with any pointing devices
 like stylus and nail.
Good for hand writing recognition
 system.
Resistive touch screen is not effected
by any elements such as dust or water.
Disadvantages of resistive touch
 screen technology….
 Can be relatively easily damaged by
  scratching.
 Can be relatively easily damaged by
  impact.
 It emits only 75% of light which make
the image relatively bulky and dim.
[2. Infrared ]
 The new generation
 IR touchscreen LCD
 has been increased
 brightness, clarity and
 durability.
Touched with a finger,
 gloved hand,
 fingernail, or stylus, it
 delivers a fast,
 accurate response
 every time.
Advantages of infrared touch
 screen technology…..

Best image quality.
Almost all kind of stylus materials can be
 used.
High stability, change in time and
 environment will not effect.
IR having no intermediate touch overlay
 so it transmit 100% light.
It used in ATMs, plasma TV, Hospital
 operation room etc.
Disadvantages of infrared touch
screen technology…..

High pressure may causes unwanted
 target selection.
 Infrared touch screen having low
 resolution.
3. Capacitive
It consist of a glass panel
                 with capacitive (charge
                 storing) material coating
                 on its surface.
                Circuits located at the
                 corners of the screen
                 measure capacitance of a
                 person touching the
                 overlay.
Advantages of capacitive touch
 screen technology…..

 Visibilityof the capacitive touch screen is
 good even in sunlight.
Highly sensitive to finger touch leading to
 easy to use.
Highly transmissivity transmit more than 85%
 of light .
Capacitive touch screen can also implement
 multi touch gesture.
This technology is used in smart phones (e.g.
Apple iPhones , HTC mobiles and Samsung )
Disadvantages of capacitive
 touch screen technology…..

Can not be used with gloved hand and
 stylus.
 need to have at least 5% humidity to
 achieve capacitive effect .
Capacitive touch screen is more
 expensive.
4.Surface acoustic wave
            Surface wave technology
             uses ultrasonic wave that
             passes over the touch
             screen panel.
            Widely used in
             application such as
             computer based training
             and information.
Advantages of SAW touch
 screen technology…..

 High Resolution.
SAW technology provides superior
 image clarity.
Highly transmissivity transmit more
 than 92% of light .
It has excellent durability that allow it to
 continue working if scratched.
This technology is used in ATMs, Banking
 and Financial applications.
Disadvantages of SAW touch
 screen technology…..

It must be touched by finger, gloved
hand and soft stylus, something hard
like a pen, credit card or finger nail
 won’t work.
 Relatively expansive in comparison
 to other technologies .
Applications
 Many games use the touchscreens as a primary controlling
    device.

 Touchscreens becomes familiar in kiosk systems (retail
    and tourist settings).

 The popularity of smart phones, ATMs, and many types of
information appliances is driving the demand for
    touchscreens.

 Touchscreens are popular in heavy industry and in other
situations, such as museum displays or room automation.
