The purpose of this survey is to get a better understanding of the reality of how often pregnancies
result from rape. As of now, the only reliable numbers that exist throughout the nation come from a
1996 survey published by the American Jurisprudence of Obstetrics and Gynecology, citing the
national number of pregnancies resulting from rape at 5% of all rapes annually. This number has
been widely cited and relied upon for 20 years, but the number of rapes fluctuates, the number of
reported rapes fluctuates, and this national average may reflect great disparities between the
number of pregnancies resulting from rape per state. This survey hopes to glean a better
understanding of how Minnesota women are affected by pregnancies resulting from rape.
