This document summarizes the application of selective editing to the UK's Office for National Statistics (ONS) Monthly Business Survey (MBS). Selective editing aims to reduce data editing costs by focusing efforts on records most impacting published estimates, while maintaining estimate quality. The ONS developed a selective editing methodology using estimate-related item scores for key variables, combined into unit scores. Unit scores above thresholds determine if a unit receives manual editing. Two surveys were combined into the new MBS, providing an opportunity to apply selective editing. Quality indicators show selective editing maintains estimate quality while achieving cost savings over traditional editing.
