Editor's Notes

  • #4: Top down learning. Information flows one way – from CNCS, Commission or Organization to grantees and members. Knowledge is transferred one to one or one to many Learning constrained by space and time. Has to happen at a specific time, in a specific location.
  • #5: Where Web 2.0 allows users to create, upload, and share content with others, versus simply downloading and consuming content. Can happen as a follow up to formal learning when the latter has been inspiring enough to drive learners to explore further. Training 2.0: The idea of training through digital connections and peer collaboration enhanced by technologies driving Web 2.0. Users/Learners are empowered to search, create, and collaborate in order to fulfill intrinsic needs to learn new information. Time and space constraints removed. Learning doesn't depend on teacher / learner – but often learner to learner Learners drive the experience
  • #6: With unique characteristics such as user participation and openness, Web 2.0 technologies are a natural fit for training and development efforts. Incorporating social media tools into a company’s education functions is heralding a new learning paradigm, where staff and leadership can access critical knowledge and information whenever and wherever they need it.
  • #7: Podcasts and vodcasts are audio and video broadcasts - digital media files distributed over the Internet and listed to, or viewed on, a portable music player or personal computer. Users can “subscribe” to content and have it delivered automatically.
  • #9: A blog is a website with regular entries of commentary, description of events, and other material of personal interest to the creator. Easy to use – no experience necessary Ability for readers to leave comments Ability to create articles or postings from anywhere there is a connection to the Internet
  • #11: On sites like YouTube, viewers can rate, share, and comment on videos. They can also place the video on their own blog or website. Can also create lists of other useful videos, favorite stuff. More than just videos of cats flushing the toilet.
  • #17: Method for users to store, organize, and share bookmarks of web pages on the Internet, as opposed to on an individual computer. Usually public, but can be kept private Examples of social bookmarking sites: Digg, Del.icio.us.
  • #21: A social networking service uses software to build online communities for people who share interests and activities or are interested in exploring the activities of others. Easy to use – no experience necessary Used both professionally and personally Focus on connecting individuals, causes, etc.
