Triangulation is a technique used to determine one's position when unable to directly fix their location on a map. It involves identifying three prominent terrain features and taking magnetic bearings of each feature. Those magnetic bearings are then converted to grid bearings by subtracting the magnetic variation. Back bearings are created by finding the opposite direction of the grid bearings. Those back bearings are drawn as lines on the map starting from the features. Where the lines intersect forms a triangle of error indicating the area where one's position lies.
