What is ? A free social networking and micro-blogging service that allows its users to send and read brief messages.
- Messages are known as “Tweets” - intended to answer the question “What are you doing?” - Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters long. - Users have a profile page where their Tweets are displayed. Basics
More Basics... Each user has their own subscribers known as “Followers” and each user can subscribe (“Follow”) other users. Users have a home page where all of their Tweets and the Tweets of the users they Follow are displayed.
@ = Reply To/Mention When replying to a user’s post, the replier would place the @ symbol before the user name of the person they are replying to. When the @ symbol is used within the Tweet, this is a Mention. More Basics...
More Basics... RT = ReTweet This could be found at the beginning of a status and would be followed with the original author’s post. It is used when a user is re-posting (ReTweeting) another user’s status. Direct Message When two users are following each other, they have the option to send a Direct Message. There is still a 140 character limit, but these messages are completely private - more like an e-mail.
Additional Capabilities Tweeters can upload images and videos to 3rd party websites and put a link in their status that directs followers to view the media.
Continued... Users can customize their profile picture, background and color scheme. Twitter tracks Tweet content and compiles “Trending Topics” that are searchable to see what people are tweeting about. Often the # symbol is used to tag a word or phrase. This symbol makes the topic more searchable & encourages it to become a Trending Topic.
