Wikipedia:  Twitter  is a free social networking service that enables its users to send and read other user messages called  tweets .  Tweets  are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the author's profile page. Users may subscribe to other author tweets — this is known as  following  and subscribers are known as  followers .  Since its creation in 2006 Twitter has gained popularity worldwide and currently has  more than 100 million users worldwide.  It is sometimes described as the "SMS/text messaging” of the Internet. What is twitter?

Getting started 1. Go to twitter.com 2. Sign up/secure your handle and build your profile & bio Custom background? Profile picture? Website information? Be genuine in your bio! 3. Find friends to follow  Use the “find people” button and search for people with similar interests, location, key words, topics, etc. See who your friends and competitors are following 4. Read posts and trending topics 5. Post your own updates 6. Google “how to” videos, blogs… 7. Repeat steps 3-5
Best Practices Build relationships (don’t always be selling—share stories, fun experiences) Be human (not just a brand) Provide QUALITY content with keywords and LINKS Listen (your followers may be able to help you) Be friendly (duh!) Respond (see the last bullet) RT (share the love) Offer VALUE (unique coupon codes, real time info and tips) Solicit feedback (customer service tool) Track clicks (because you should know what works)
If you do try twitter… STAY ENGAGED Don’t just follow tweeps you know Don’t just follow brands and celebs Join the conversation And remember… You DO have something to say Get mobile Update regularly—make it part of your lifestyle (daily or more)
