Types of Contract and Recruitment Methods
By Clayton Skorski
Types of Contract:
Full Time:
This means that you work for a certain company for 5/6 days of the week, and
around 40 hours a week. The rewards of this are that you have a solid income
and work. The disadvantages to this are that your income might not be enough.
Also, you might not even like the job you are working at.
Part Time:
Working part time is working the odd day a week, doing a certain amount of
hours, around 18 hours seems to be the standard amount. The rewards is that
you can have flexible hours and being able to go to college or have free time to
do what you want in the time that you are not working. The disadvantages are
that you may not be able to work properly at college and at work because you’re
not there enough.
Freelance:
This is someone who is a self-employee, this means owning your own shop. The
advantages to this are that you can have flexible hours, make good money if the
company does fine and you’re your own boss. However, the disadvantages are
that if the company falls through, you could be left with no money at all, no
profit and no workers.
Shift work:
Shift work is when a company wants to be open 24/7. This means people change
shifts, meaning they’re hours will change. This is an advantage because of its
flexibility and they will be able to have a 24 hour service. On the other hand,
this has its drawbacks due to it could be difficult for the employees to keep up
with when they should be working and because other workers maybe working
more hours that others, yet are getting paid the same amount as those who
work more.
Permanent:
This means working and getting paid directly, also receiving benefits. They can
also change their job position. The advantages to this are that you have a secure
job within a company. The disadvantages are that you could have the possibility
of losing your job and less access meaning fewer chances to network.
Temporary:
This means working temporarily for a company, meaning that you have to leave
after a certain amount of time. The advantages to this are that you gain
experience and not having to stay at the one job. The disadvantages are that it
isn’t a secure job.
Recruitment within the Creative Media Sector:
Job centres & careers advice:
This is where people can talk to other people on their skills and where they
would do better working. The advantage is that you are getting the correct help
from professionals. The disadvantages are that they might not be able to find a
job that fits your skills.
Local & national press:
This is a non-profit company that provides training for journalists and awards
excellence in journalism. The advantages to this are that people will be awarded
for their work. However, the disadvantage is that it only specialises in that one
sector.
Personal contacts & word of mouth:
Personal contacts are often encouraged by organizations, to improve
productivity. The advantages to this are that it will help build team work, the
disadvantage is that it might not work and could make it difficult to work.
Networking:
Business networking is a social activity, which groups of ‘like-minded’
businesspeople recognize, create, or act upon business opportunities. This helps
build a positive working environment, however, it could divide the company if
some employees don’t agree.
Internet:
Is a global network to connect people to one another, it involves; public,
academic, business, and government networks. The advantages to this are that
it can help people connect and gain information. The disadvantage is that it can
be dangerous to a certain audience.
