There are four main types of respiration in animals: cutaneous respiration where gas exchange occurs through the skin, as in earthworms; branchial respiration using gills for gas exchange, seen in fish; tracheal respiration using a tracheal system of tubes, found in insects and arachnids; and pulmonary respiration using lungs, which occurs in humans and other air-breathing vertebrates.
