Students will be able to
identify and define
four main writing
styles (persuasive,
narrative, expository,
and descriptive) and
their respective
characteristics.
Students will
understand the
importance of
understanding and
mastering different
writing styles for
effective
communication,
audience engagement,
versatility, and career
advancement.
Students will be able to
analyze examples of
writing samples from
each style (persuasive,
narrative, expository,
and descriptive) to
recognize their unique
features and
applications.
Introduction to
Writing styles refer to the distinct ways in which writers
express their ideas and convey their messages through
written language. These styles encompass a range of
techniques, structures, and tones that help writers achieve
specific goals and connect with their audiences effectively.
The four main writing styles are: Persuasive writing, Narrative
writing, Expository writing and Descriptive writing.
Types of Writing for the average student to read
Persuasive writing, also known as the argument essay, uses
logic and reason to show that one idea is more legitimate
than another. It attempts to persuade a reader to adopt a
certain point of view or to take a particular action.
Aside from standard writing skills, a persuasive essay author
can also draw on personal experience, logical arguments, an
appeal to emotion, and compelling speech to influence
readers.
"In today's interconnected world, the ability to speak more than one
language is not just advantageous, but essential. Learning a second
language not only enhances cognitive abilities such as problem-solving
and memory retention but also fosters cultural understanding and
empathy. Moreover, it opens doors to a myriad of opportunities, from
international travel to career advancement in the globalized economy.
By mastering a second language, individuals not only equip themselves
with valuable communication skills but also position themselves as
informed and adaptable citizens of the world, ready to navigate and
contribute to an increasingly diverse and interconnected society."

Narrative writing can be broadly defined as story writing – a
piece of writing characterized by a main character in a setting
who encounters a problem or engages in an interesting,
significant or entertaining activity or experience. What
happens to this main character is called the plot.
There are multiple ways to write a narrative. The right kind of
narrative for your story or essay depends on your goals for
the piece you’re writing:
Linear narrative
With a linear narrative, a
story’s events are told in
chronological order. Most
books, movies, TV shows, and
other pieces of media are
linear narratives. With a
linear narrative, each scene
is followed by the next logical
scene.
In contrast to a linear
narrative, a nonlinear
narrative presents its story’s
events in nonchronological
order. By choosing a
nonlinear narrative for your
writing, you can emphasize
your characters’ emotions
and perspectives on the
events in the story.
Nonlinear
narrative
Viewpoint
narrative
A viewpoint narrative focuses
on the narrator’s perspective
of the story’s events.
Generally, these kinds of
stories are more character
driven than plot driven.
Through a narrative
viewpoint, you can explore
facets of your protagonist’s
personality and expose your
readers to their thoughts.
In a descriptive narrative, the
focus is on how the story’s
setting, characters, and
objects look and feel. The
goal here is total immersion
in the world of the story; this
is different from how a
viewpoint narrative strives to
create immersion in a
character’s inner world, a
limited perspective on the
Descriptive
narrative
Narrative Writing
"As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow over the
tranquil meadow, Sarah found herself lost in the pages of her favorite
book. With each word, she was transported to a world of adventure and
mystery. The gentle rustle of leaves and the distant chirping of crickets
provided the perfect backdrop to her evening escape. As the protagonist
faced their greatest challenge yet, Sarah's heart raced with anticipation,
eager to discover how the story would unfold. Lost in the magic of
storytelling, she embraced the enchanting world within the pages and
let her imagination soar."

Expository writing is a form of writing that aims to inform,
explain, or describe a topic in a clear and concise manner. It
presents factual information, often using examples,
evidence, and logical analysis to convey complex concepts or
phenomena. Examples of expository writing include
textbooks, informative articles, scientific reports, and
explanatory essays.
Expository Writing
"The water cycle, also known as the hydrological cycle, is a fundamental
process that describes the continuous movement of water on Earth. It
begins with evaporation, where water from oceans, lakes, and rivers
turns into vapor due to heat from the sun. This vapor rises into the
atmosphere and condenses to form clouds through the process of
condensation. Eventually, these clouds release precipitation in the form
of rain, snow, or sleet, which falls back to the Earth's surface. The water
then collects in bodies of water or infiltrates into the ground, where it
may be stored as groundwater or runoff, completing the cycle. The
water cycle plays a crucial role in maintaining Earth's ecosystems and
sustaining life."

The primary purpose of descriptive writing is to describe a
person, place or thing in such a way that a picture is formed
in the reader's mind. Capturing an event through descriptive
writing involves paying close attention to the details by using
all of your five senses.
"The ancient oak tree stood majestically in the heart of the forest, its
gnarled branches reaching toward the sky like outstretched fingers. Its
thick trunk, weathered and worn with age, bore the scars of countless
seasons gone by. Vibrant green moss adorned its bark, adding a touch of
color to its rugged exterior. Sunlight filtered through the dense canopy
above, casting dappled shadows on the forest floor below. A chorus of
birdsong filled the air, accompanied by the gentle rustle of leaves in the
breeze. Around the base of the tree, delicate wildflowers bloomed, their
petals swaying in the gentle rhythm of nature. In the embrace of this
ancient sentinel, time seemed to stand still, and the beauty of the natural
world unfolded in all its splendor."
Descriptive Writing
Types of Writing for the average student to read
Choose one of the following prompts or scenarios that can be
approached from different writing styles and write a
paragraph:
• Writing Prompt: "Imagine you are trying to convince your
classmates to volunteer for a community service project."
• Scenario: "Write a story about a character embarking on a
quest to find a lost treasure."
• Topic: "Explain the process of photosynthesis to a younger
audience."
• Setting Description: "Describe a bustling marketplace on a
busy Saturday morning."
