Types verbs grammar lesson
Which are the two parts of a
sentence?

  subject           predicate
Which is the main word of a
predicate?
                  verb
There are 4 types of verbs:
 action verbs        linking verbs
  what a subject     tells what the
  does               subject is or is
                     like
main verbs         helping verbs
names the action   helps tell the time
                   of the action
Action verbs can tell about
actions that are physical
(walk, carry) or mental
(forget, understand).


Forms of the verbs to be
(am, is, are, was, were) are
often used as linking verbs.
These verbs can be linking verbs:
become, seem, appear, feel, taste, s
mell, and look. (I feel hungry. The
pie smells delicious.)

However some of them can also be
used as action verbs (Feel this
fabric. The dog smells many
scents.)
1. The girl feels nervous.
   Answer: feels, linking verb
2. Today is her wedding day.
   Answer: is, linking verb
3. She sits in a fancy chair.
   Answer: sits, action verb
4. Footmen carry the chair on their
shoulders.
  Answer: carry, action verb
5. The girl is only sixteen.
  Answer: is, linking verb
6. Her parents arranged the
marriage.
  Answer: arranged, action verb
7. She sees her husband for the
first time.
  Answer: sees, action verb
8. He looks handsome and kind.
  Answer: looks, linking verb
9. She appears happy and content.
  Answer: appears, linking verb
10. Some Chinese customs seem
unusual to us.
  Answer: seem, linking verb
11. Animals symbolize different
things.
  Answer: symbolize, action verb
12. A coyote is resourceful and
cunning.
  Answer: is, linking verb
13. An eagle seems fiercely proud
and free.
  Answer: seems, linking verb
14. The lion rules its territory with
dignity.
  Answer: rules, action verb
15. A lion appears kinglike to
people.
  Answer: appears, linking verb
