This document provides information and instructions for Assignment 1 of the DIS Architecture and Design course. Students are asked to design a temporary public space intervention in Copenhagen's Fuglekvarteret neighborhood. The assignment has three phases: Phase 1 involves observing and documenting existing space usage patterns. Phase 2 uses this analysis to program potential new functions for the space. Site & Context
The site is located in a disadvantaged area of Copenhagen; Copenhagen
North-West, Fuglekvarteret (Bird Neighborhood). This historic working class
family residential and industrial factory area of the city has been chosen for
Integrated Urban Renewal (a socio-sensitive Copenhagen-developed Urban
Renewal Model). The urban renewal process started in 2013 and will continue
until 2018, with implementation of a substantial number of different programs
and initiatives.
Part of these initiatives is the re branding or re appropriation of under used
urban space through the introduction of temporary spaces, temporary urban
furniture, temporary art installations. This assignment will explore just that.
The objective of the assignment is to design/appropriate a temporary public
space, in the most literal sense of the word [public space]; as an accessible and
usable space for everyone.
Design Product
The programming of activities and functions in the temporary space is an
integral part of the solution and must be based on findings from a site analysis.
The site analysis findings are considered as vital parts of “concept
development” because these findings will form the chain of arguments leading
up to a in informed design proposal. Projects tend to either succeed or fail
depending upon their ability to successfully respond to the complex social
context of people and their culture. So don’t guess. Gather data for your
arguments instead. In this assignment students are expected to program and
design the urban space using mainly diagrams and spatial collages as tools for
communicating and presenting the idea. The goal of the assignment is to test
whether a temporary intervention/installation/urban furniture can generate
an instant impact on a place. Is place making via temporary urban space a
viable and fruitful way to plan?

Introduction
Urban Design is understood as both the physical design of urban spaces as well
as the organizational design of the diverse set of functions which are contained
within these places.
Assignment 1 is about programming and designing a temporary installation
in urban space. A space that facilitate multiple user groups –both in terms of
functions as well as design. The scope of the assignment is social interaction,
multi-use, user group diversity, and democratic design. It is about designing
for people and everyday life. The over-all question to be explored is: How can
Temporary Space form a positive and instantaneous impact in an existing run
down urban space?

Design objectives
• The space must relate to the surrounding context! Be sensitive,
sensible and mindful.
• All functions must relate to the local needs and daily flow such as bike and
pedestrian traffic through the area.
• Surrounding buildings and their interface with the space must be
addressed. Edges, facades and entrances are key issues!
• Micro-climate issues must be addressed: Maximize sun, minimize shade,
wind, rain etc.
• Democratically designed physical intervention/installation/urban furniture
must be included as part of the design
• The designed intervention/installation/urban furniture must be build on site
in scale 1:1
• The designed intervention/installation/urban furniture must generate
place-making!
Phase 01: Understanding Use of Urban Space
The assignment is kick-started with a small team mapping-assignment. A
Mapping assignment, where the movement and staying patterns of people are
observed, registered and documented:
Desire Lines: Record the movement and patterns of people in plan diagram
Dot-map: Record the movement patterns of people in plan diagram
Functions & Activities : Record the activities of people and the use of space (e.g.
seating, sports, events (day/evening) via photo documentation.
Place identity: Create a “Mood board.” Describe with minimal text and 5-10
photos the character of the space.
The results will be presented and discussed in studio.
The aim of the kick-off assignment is to introduce basic tools of analysis.
Analyzing the urban context is a precondition for understanding the urban
context.

Phase 02: Programming Urban Space
Next, the results of the analysis is to inform the further process of understanding
the space. Understanding the spatial qualities (or potentials) of the site, the
context, the current (and possible future) use of the space and most importantly;
the potential of the space as a dynamic, democratic, diverse urban space. This
potential is to be the foundation of the programming of the space. Explore
the diagram in this phase. The diagram is an architecturally important working
method in this process.
Phase 02 will be concluded with a summary of the mapping and analysis
material. Each student will make a statement of intent for their design proposals
which should be described in 5 to 6 bullet points and diagrams. Statements
should be based on points from phase 01 and will be an essential tool and
guideline in the design process.

DIS • Architecture and Design Assignment 1 Spring 2014 DIS • Architecture and Design Assignment 1 Spring 2014 Urban Place Making 1:1 • phase 03, proposal and submission, evaluation and criteria Phase 03: Making a place! An overall design for the space should be developed at concept level. A physical intervention/installation/urban furniture must be build on site in scale 1:1 New Spaces facilitating new functions.... Design proposals and Submission material Students will work rigorously with a series of sketch models of their installations before building the actual one. Students will be expected to submit the following material for the final presentation: • all material from phase 01 • all material from phase 02 • site plan 1:500 • cross section 1:500 • sketch models • perspective drawing / collage to illustrate the space in use • photo and/or video documentation of the build installation in use Make sure that ALL your design decisions are based and informed by the mapping and site analysis from Phase 01. New functions facilitating new spatial user patterns.... Submission Format Drawings should be presented on sheets of A-format, that is 30x42cm, 42x60cm, 60x84cm, in order to facilitate reproduction. Drawings are to be presented on a A0 board. A name tag, provided by the AD office, must be placed along the top edge of the board for the submission to be counted as on time. All materials are due on September 29 at 22:00. To avoid plotter backup and breakdowns we offer to plot your boards for you. To do this we need a full day and will close the plotters for student use at 09:00 on Wednesday, September 29. We will open them again after our plotting is complete. If you wish to have us plot for you submit a PDF, by Wednesday, September 29, to the following folder: AD_Documents>To_AD_Department>FA10>Asn_2_Plot_Submissions> It is important to specify in the title your name, size of your plot, and how many plots we are to do so we do not forget to print one. Example: tamashaf_105cmx120cm_1of1.pdf Also note that the maximum length for plotting is 120cm wide file. This reduces problems for us and is easier to do in the application producing the file. Please make sure that your submitted file is a PDF. In order to reduce spooling time please make your file is 10 MB or less in size. Evaluation criteria - daily work in studio (process) - context sensitivity - concept development - design process - coherency & communication - resourcefulness and team-spirit when building on site Evaluation is based on daily work in studio (process) 40% and final presentation (completion of assignment goals including: concept, context, function, completeness and presentation) 60%. We will not accept any other file formats.
