New drinking and driving laws in Canada have significantly reduced patronage at bars and restaurants on Bowen Island. The owner of the local pub has seen a 40% decrease in customers and has been forced to close three days a week as a result. The branch president of the local Legion has also noticed lower sales and that it has become more of a neighborhood bar. The owner of a local restaurant reported decreases in alcohol sales and observed that customers are now "petrified" to have even one drink due to the lower legal blood alcohol limit of 0.05.
