Part I – Windows 7 Features
What is Windows 7
• One of the Windows Operating Systems (OS)
developed by Microsoft Corporation
• OS controls and manages everything that is
done/happens on the computer
– All operations that are performed by the computer
itself (i.e. hardware and software operations)
– All operations that a user performs (e.g. playing
music, typing a document, etc)
• Other OS examples:
– Linux, UNIX, MAC OS, Windows XP, Windows 8, 10, etc
Windows 7
• Windows 7 is all about delivering on the
failures of Vista
• Performance improvements
– Boot-up time is faster
– Search has been optimized to return results
faster.
– Unused services are turned off unlike Vista
– USB devices are ready for use in less time after
you plug them in.
What is Windows 7
• Boot before usage
– Booting:
• The point where the computer initializes its operations after
the user has pressed the power buttons on the monitor and
most importantly on the System Unit
• Process where the computer loads some key programs of
the OS and some other programs into memory
– Two Processes takes place
• Power On Self Test (POST)
• OS Loading
– Boot by pressing Power Button

Windows 7 – Booting Process
• Cold Booting: When PC is off and it is turned
on
• Warm Booting: When PC is on and it is
restarted for OS to reload
– When to Warm Boot
• After installing a new software
• After installing a new device and its drivers
• When PC runs slowly
• After a Utility has performed operation
The Desktop
• The screen that displays once you have turned
on the computer
– Responded to prompts for your user name and
password
• It is where you manage tasks on the computer.
• Your software opens on the desktop.
• You manipulate your files and folders on the
desktop.
Windows 7 - Desktop Screen Elements
• Taskbar: Usually lies beneath the screen. Contains
the Start button, Quick launch buttons, display
buttons & notification area
– Enables navigation of launched/opened programs and
folders
• Start button: Activates the Start menu when
clicked
– Start menu contains links for launching programs,
folders, control panel, search for items, etc.
• Launch buttons: Quick means to launch programs
Windows 7 - Desktop Screen Elements
• Display buttons: Appears on desktop when its
corresponding program/folder window is
launched.
– Helps in navigating between launched
programs/folder window
• Notification area: Also called System Tray,
holds buttons of running background
programs

• Icon: An image that represents a file, folder,
program shortcut or other things
• Wallpaper: The background image or color
• Working are: Any free space on the desktop
• Mouse Pointer: Corresponds to the movement
and actions that are performed with the
mouse

Part II – Exploring Windows 7
Adding Gadgets
• Gadgets: Mini programs that , which offer
information at a glance and provide easy access
to frequently used tools
• Gadgets when activated run constantly on your
desktop.
• Steps:
– Right-click the desktop
– Click Gadgets
– Double-click the preferred gadget (Do same to other
preferred gadgets)
– Click Close gadget
Snap, Shake and Peek
• Snap:
– Used to display two windows side-by-side
• Press and hold mouse pointer on the first window
• Drag to the left side of the Desktop
– When it gets to the left side, the windows snaps to fill half of the screen
• Press and hold mouse pointer on the second window
• Drag to the right side of the Desktop
or
• Press + Right arrow keys to snap to right
• Press + Left arrow keys to snap to left
– Also used to maximize/enlarge a window
• Press and hold mouse pointer on the window
• Drag the window to the top
Or
• Press + Left arrow keys to maximize window
• Shake:
– Allows you to minimize all opened windows to the
taskbar except the active window
– Active window: Current window you are working
in
– Procedure
• Resize the active window
• Press and hold pointer on the Title bar of the window
• While still pressed, shake the mouse
Snap, Shake and Peek
• Peak:
– Makes all opened windows transparent so that
only the Desktop, taskbar and its contents and
icons display
– Procedure
• Move pointer to the Show Desktop button (i.e. after
the notification area)
• Hover the pointer on that button for a while
– When you move pointer from it, the windows display again
• If you click it, the windows would become transparent
till you click it again
Snap, Shake and Peek
Pinning, Jump-list & Live Preview
• Pinning:
– Used to place program shortcuts and files on the
Taskbar.
– The pinned item becomes launch button. When
clicked would launch/open the program or file in its
program
– Pinned buttons can also be repositioned
– Procedure
• Press and hold on item to be pinned (from desktop or its
containing folder)
• Drag it onto the Taskbar
• Jump-list
– This has replaced the Recent document feature in
Windows XP
– A Jump-list displays recently opened files that are
associated with a particular Launch button/Display
button
– Procedure
• Right-click the preferred Launch/Display button
– List of recently accessed files associated with that launch
button displays
Pinning, Jump-list & Live Preview
• Live Preview
– It allows you to see a 3D preview of a running program’s/folder’s
window or the window instances of the program/folder
– Procedure
• Hover pointer the preferred Display button
• The Live Previews display
• Live Preview Peek
– Displays the window that is live previewed temporarily as it is
hovered on
– Helpful when you have several minimized files open in one
program
– Procedure
• Hover the pointer on the preferred live preview
• When a window is clicked, it becomes the active window
Pinning, Jump-list & Live Preview
Menus
• A menu refers to a group of related commands
that are put into a list
• Four types
– Pull Up: It rises from beneath a button
– Drop Down: Reveals from the top from a button or
item
– Context: Appears when the mouse is right-clicked. The
menus that appear differ from one another depending
on where the right-clicking is done
– Fly-out: Emerges from a menu item that is hovered on
or selected of an activated menu.
Start Menu Features
• Programs: Displays a list of programs that you
commonly access on the computer
• All Programs: Displays list of programs
installed
• Search box: Enables you to type keywords to
complete searches for files or folders on your
computer
• Libraries: Contains links to the Document,
Picture, Music libraries
Start Menu Features
• PC Management Tools: Used to modify the
main settings of the PC and find assistance
• Shutdown button: Used to turn off the PC or
active alternatives to Shutdown

Mouse Operations
Customizing User Account picture
• Changing user account picture
– Click the Start button
– At the right-top of the Start menu, click the
picture
– Click Change your picture
– Click preferred picture/Browse for more pictures
– Click Ok
Themes
• A theme is a combination settings which may
include a desktop background/wallpaper, a
screen saver, a window border color, and a
sound scheme.
Customizing Wallpaper
• Right-click the Desktop
• Click Personalize on the context menu
• Select from Aero theme pictures of preferred
• Click Desktop Background
– Click Browse and choose pictures’ folder
– Choose the cycle period
– Click Ok/Save changes
Activating a Screen Saver
• Pictures/graphics that displays on the screen
when the PC is left idle for a set period
• Disappears when user begins to reuse the PC
• Procedure
– Right-click the Desktop
– Click Personalize
– Click Screen Saver
– Click the (None) button
– Choose preferred Screen Saver
– Set the Wait period
– Click the OK button
Changing Screen Resolution
• Has to do with how clear text and images display on the
screen.
• The higher the resolution, the sharper the graphics will
display
– Technically it determines how many pixels can display
horizontally and vertically
• Procedure
– Right-click the Desktop
– Click Screen Resolution
– Click the Resolution box
– Drag the slider to the preferred resolution (i.e. either up or
down)
– Click the OK button
Setting the Date and Time
• Setting the Date
• Procedure:
– Click the Date at the Notification area
– Click Change Date and Time settings on the pop-up menu
– Click Change date and time button
– Click the Month, Year (e.g. June, 2016)
• Click it once more
– Click the current year (e.g. 2016)
– Click the current month (e.g. October)
– Click the current day of the month (e.g. 12)
– Click the OK button
• Setting the Time
• Procedure:
– Click the Date at the Notification area
– Click Change Date and Time settings on the pop-up
menu
– Click Change date and time button
– Select the number at the hour section and type the
right hour’s number there
– Do same with the minutes and seconds sections
– Click the OK button

Mouse Pointer Symbols
Switch user, Log off, Lock Restart, Hibernate
• Switch user:
– This feature allows you to move from one user
account to another without exiting the current
active user account
• Can only happen if more than one user account is
created
– Procedure
• Click the Start button
• Click the arrow next to the Shut down button
• Click Switch user
• Details of User Accounts to be discussed later
• Log off:
– When you start a computer session through
booting and signing in, you log on
– To log off means the user is exiting from the user
account for another user to use the PC
– Procedure
• Click the Start button
• Click the arrow next to the Shut down button
• Click Log off
Switch user, Log off, Lock, Restart, Hibernate
• Lock
– Lock enables the user to prevent other people
from accessing the PC while the user steps away
for a while
• To unlock user must re-enter password (to be covered
later)
– Procedure
• Click the Start button
• Click the arrow next to the Shut down button
• Click Lock
Switch user, Log off, Lock, Restart, Hibernate
• Restart:
– Causing the PC to reload the OS and other
relevant programs
– Procedure:
• Click the Start button
• Click the arrow next to the Shut down button
• Click Restart
Switch user, Log off, Lock, Restart, Hibernate
• Sleep:
– Sleep If you’re going to be away from your
computer, conserve power and protect your work
by putting your computer into Sleep mode.
– Procedure
• Click the Start button
• Click the arrow next to the Shut down button
• Click Sleep
Switch user, Log off, Lock, Restart, Hibernate
• Hibernate
– Hibernate is similar to Sleep, except that it saves
open files and the state of running programs on
your hard disk instead of in memory, and then
completely turns off the computer.
– Procedure
• Click the Start button
• Click the arrow next to the Shut down button
• Click Hibernate
• Inactive if Sleep is activated on PC
Switch user, Log off, Lock, Restart, Hibernate
Shutting the PC down
• This causes all software running to unload and
stops all hardware from running.
• It also cuts the power source from the PC until
it is started again
• Procedure
– Click Start button
– Click Shut down
• Need to remove all removable storages before
shut down

  • 40. • Hibernate – Hibernate is similar to Sleep, except that it saves open files and the state of running programs on your hard disk instead of in memory, and then completely turns off the computer. – Procedure • Click the Start button • Click the arrow next to the Shut down button • Click Hibernate • Inactive if Sleep is activated on PC Switch user, Log off, Lock, Restart, Hibernate
  • 41. Shutting the PC down • This causes all software running to unload and stops all hardware from running. • It also cuts the power source from the PC until it is started again • Procedure – Click Start button – Click Shut down • Need to remove all removable storages before shut down
