Range?
Dr. Ashish Suttee, M.Pharm., MBAHCS., PGD Stat., Ph.D. 1
Range
1. The Range is the difference between the lowest and highest values.
Dr. Ashish Suttee, M.Pharm., MBAHCS., PGD Stat., Ph.D. 2
Range formula
The formula of the range in statistics, can simply be given by the difference
between highest and lowest value.
Range = Highest Value – Lowest Value
Or
Range = Highest observation – Lowest observationOr
Range = Maximum value – Minimum Value
Dr. Ashish Suttee, M.Pharm., MBAHCS., PGD Stat., Ph.D. 3
How to Find Range in Statistics?
1. To find the range in statistics, we need to arrange the given values or set of
data or set of observations in ascending order.
2. That means, firstly write the observations from lowest to highest value. Now,
we need to use the formula to find the range of observations.
Dr. Ashish Suttee, M.Pharm., MBAHCS., PGD Stat., Ph.D. 4
How useful is the range?
1. The range generally gives you a good indicator of variability when you have a
distribution without extreme values. When paired with measures of central
tendency, the range can tell you about the span of the distribution.
2. But the range can be misleading when you have outliers in your data set. One
extreme value in the data will give you a completely different range.
Dr. Ashish Suttee, M.Pharm., MBAHCS., PGD Stat., Ph.D. 5
Example 1: Find the range of given observations: 32, 41, 28, 54, 35, 26, 23,
33, 38, 40.
Example 2: Following are the marks of students in Mathematics: 50, 53, 50,
51, 48, 93, 90, 92, 91, 90. Find the range of the marks.
