Unit 1 Introducing Chemistry
1.1 Chemical Changes What is a chemical reaction ? What is a precipitate ? What is effervescence ? What is exothermic/endothermic? What are 5 ways of telling a chemical reaction has occurred? What are atoms and an element in terms of atoms?
1.1 Chemical Changes How are capital and small letters used in writing symbols? Why do some elements have strange symbols? E.g. Copper is Cu, silver is Ag. What is an element ? What is a period and a group in the periodic table?
1.2 Reaction rates What is the units of temperature? How does changing the following effect the speed of a chemical reaction? 1. Temperature 2. Concentration 3. Particle Size
1.2 Reaction rates What is M a measure of when using solutions? What is a compound ? (in terms of elements and atoms ) What is the ‘ ide ’ rule when naming compounds? What is a mixture ?
1.3 Dissolving Compounds What is the meaning of: 1. Soluble 2. Insoluble 3. Solution How can a data book be used to determine if a substance is soluble? What is a molecule ?
1.3 Valency What is the valency of an atom? How are valency cards used? What is the maximum valency normally allowed for atoms?
1.4 Separating Methods What are the following methods of separation used to separate: 1. Filtration 2. Distillation 3. Flotation What is the meaning of the following: 1. Filtrate 2. Residue 3. Distillate
1.4 Separating Methods What is a formula? How are formulae written? How can the valency of an element be determined? How are valency pictures drawn and used to determine formulae?
1.5 Testing Properties What are the properties of a substance? How are the following tests carried out on a gas: 1. Burning splint test 2. Glowing splint test 3. Limewater test
1.5 Testing Properties What is the test for carbon dioxide and describe its properties ? What does the word state mean in Chemistry? How are flame tests carried out? How can a data book be used to find flame colours?
1.5 Chemical Code What is the ‘ ate ’ rule for compounds? How can the Periodic Table be used to draw the valency picture for compounds? When and how are brackets used in a formula? How would the valency of a group ion be determined?
1.7 Roman Numbers In a compound’s name, what do Roman Numbers tell you? Why are Roman numbers sometimes required? What are prefixes? What do they tell you about a compound?
1.8 Researching Names What are the chemical names of some substances: 1. Marble 2. Chalk 3. Magnesia 4. Common salt 5. Epsom salt
