Unit 16: Film and Video Editing Techniques
Task One (A)
1. What is editing?
Editing is the art, technique and practice of assembling shots into a
coherent sequence.
2. What is Elliptical editing?
Elliptical editing is a technique used in film editing that allows an
event’s durations on-screen to be shorter than it’s duration in reality. A
great example of this is a mountain climbing sequence from Batman
Begins - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dpJGC13TG6k
3. Why are long shots used?
A long shot typically shows the entire object or human figure and is
usually intended to place it in the relation to it’s surroundings. It can set
the scene and can also be used as an establishing shot. An example of
a long shot is in the 1963 film, Cleopatra.
4. What is non-diegetic sound?
It’s a sound whose source isn’t visible on the screen. A good example
of this is a narrator’s commentary or mood music.
5. What does an overhead establishing shot achieve?
It’s similar to a long shot, as it is used to set the scene and provides the
viewer with the context of the subsequent closer shots
6. What is a Shot Reverse Shot?
It’s often used where one character is shown looking at another, and
then the other character is shown looking back at the first character. It’s

really helpful and often used for conversations. Here is a good
example demonstrating this technique -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1Ey0a6LJRA
7. What is eye-line matching?
It’s used to show the audience what a character is looking at as if it’s
from their perspective. This method was used in the 1996 film ’The
Stendhal Syndrome -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSFD6aIhvFI .
8. What is a wipe?
A wipe is a form of transition, it usually a line that travels across the
screen pushing off one image and revealing another. This is how it can
most commonly appear -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97kbFY16xr8
9. What is the effect of using quick cuts?
Fast cutting is a film editing technique used to show several
consecutive shots of a brief duration. It’s used to convey a lot of
information very quickly or to imply chaos. One of my favorites
examples of this is from Shaun of the Dead -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4YY6mymW4oA .
10. What is cross cutting?
It’s an editing technique most used in films to establish action occurring
at the same time in two different locations. It can form parallels and
encourage the viewer to compare the two shots. Inception uses
this technique flawlessly, the contrast from the dull, rainy blue to
the luxurious golden glow is visually interesting to the audience, plus it
plays a good part in telling the story. -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmptU7vEkNU .
11. What are reaction shots?
A cut to a shot of a characters reaction to the contents of the preceding
shot. The best example on the Internet is from ‘Cloudy with a Chance
of Meatballs’ - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MdthDT8mW4o
12. What is continuity editing?
By Chelsie Brandrick
The idea of this style of editing is to create a smooth flow between all of
the clips so the narrative of the story will be obvious without
interruptions.
13. What is a jump cut?
It’s an abrupt transition from one scene to another.
14. What is a flashback and what does it achieve?
The term flashback was first created by D.W Griffith. A flashback is a
transition in a story to an earlier time that interrupts the normal
chronological order of events. Flashbacks are usually used to clarify
plot or backstory but have also been used as an unreliable narrator.
15.How can editing be used poetically?
You can use additional pictures, sounds and editing techniques to build
up a certain mood when editing. Some of these are: shadows, colours
and filters, music and placing shots together that either contrast or
don’t.
