What is Curriculum
Integration?
Curriculum Integration is the process of
interconnecting different subject areas to create
a cohesive learning experience for students.
Instead of teaching subjects in isolation, this
approach allows students to see connections
between disciplines and apply knowledge in
meaningful ways.
Overview of K to 12 Curriculum
Implemented under RA 10533 (Enhanced Basic
Education Act of 2013).
Covers Kindergarten, six years of elementary, four
years of junior high school, and two years of senior
high school (SHS).
Aims to develop holistic learners equipped with 21st-
century skills.
Introduces SHS specializations for career readiness.
In the K-12 curriculum, Makabayan integrates subjects like Araling
Panlipunan, Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao (EsP), MAPEH, and TLE
to create a well-rounded education. This integration helps
students connect lessons from different subjects to their daily
lives and develop important skills.
Example: In Araling Panlipunan, students learn about Filipino
heroes. They create a poster about a hero’s life (MAPEH) and
discuss how the hero’s values apply to today’s world (EsP).
K-12 Curriculum
1.
Overview of MATATAG Curriculum
Introduced in 2023 to strengthen and simplify the K
to 12 curriculum.
MATATAG stands for:
MAking the curriculum relevant
1.
TAking care of learners' well-being
2.
TAking steps to address learning losses
3.
Giving support to teachers
4.
Focuses on developing foundational skills in literacy,
numeracy, and socio-emotional learning.
The Matatag Curriculum focuses on teaching fewer but more
important topics. It allows students to understand lessons deeply
and use what they learn in real-life situations.
Example: A lesson on caring for the environment may include
creating a compost bin (TLE), discussing its importance (EsP),
and learning about recycling processes (Araling Panlipunan).
2. Matatag Curriculum
K-12 Curriculum:
Makabayan combines subjects like Araling Panlipunan,
Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao (EsP), MAPEH, and TLE.
It’s called the "laboratory of life" because it promotes hands-
on learning, values education, and activities that connect
different subjects.
Each subject has its unique goals but works together for the
student’s overall development.
Difference between K-12 and
Matatag Curriculum
Matatag Curriculum:
This is an improved version of K-12, focusing on fewer topics to
help students master what they learn.
Makabayan-related subjects are simplified to avoid overlapping
lessons.
It highlights essential skills, critical thinking, and emotional
development while reducing the number of subjects.
In short, K-12 emphasizes variety and integration, while Matatag
focuses on simplifying and strengthening core skills.
How K-12 and Matatag Curriculum Integrate?
The K to 12 and MATATAG curriculums are integrated by
improving the way students learn while keeping the good parts of
K to 12. The MATATAG Curriculum focuses on making lessons
simpler and more effective by reducing the number of subjects in
early grades and strengthening important skills like reading,
writing, and math. It still follows the main goals of K to 12, such as
preparing students for college, jobs, or skills training, but with
better teaching methods and clearer learning goals. This
integration helps students learn more meaningfully, reduces
unnecessary schoolwork, and ensures they are well-prepared for
the future.
B. Modes of Integrative Teaching
1. Content-Based Instruction (CBI)
CBI combines learning content and skills in one lesson. Students
study a topic while improving related skills, like writing or
problem-solving.
Example: Students study the effects of natural disasters in
Araling Panlipunan and practice writing emergency plans in
English.
B. Modes of Integrative Teaching
2. Focusing Inquiry
This method starts with a question or problem. Students explore
answers through research and teamwork, making learning more
engaging.
Example: Students ask, “How can we protect our local
culture?” They research local traditions, interview elders, and
present their findings through videos or art projects.
B. Modes of Integrative Teaching
3. Generic Competency Model
This approach develops skills that can be used in different areas,
like teamwork, problem-solving, and communication.
Example: A project on school cleanliness involves students
planning a cleanup drive (teamwork), solving waste problems
(problem-solving), and presenting their ideas to the school
(communication).
B. Modes of Integrative Teaching
4. Thematic Teaching
Thematic teaching organizes lessons around a single theme,
connecting different subjects under one topic.
Example: A theme like “Healthy Living” includes fitness
exercises (MAPEH), meal planning (TLE), and discussions on
personal wellness and decision-making (EsP).
Answer the following:
1.What is curriculum integration, and why is it important in education?
2.How does the K to 12 curriculum develop holistic learners and
prepare them for future careers?
3.What are the key differences between the K to 12 curriculum and
the MATATAG curriculum?
4.How does the MATATAG curriculum improve learning by focusing
on fewer but more essential topics?
5.What are the different modes of integrative teaching, and how do
they help students connect lessons across subjects?
Thank you!
