INTRODUCTORY INFORMATION ABOUT
EARTHQUAKES
Module: Measuring the Earth with GPS
Unit 2: Earthquakes, GPS, and Plate Movement
By Karen M. Kortz and Jessica J. Smay
Version: 10 July 2019
EARTHQUAKE DAMAGE: HAITI, 2010
Author: Marco Dormino/ The United Nations
TECTONIC PLATES MOVE
EARTHQUAKES HAPPEN ALONG PLATE BOUNDARIES
Author: Phoenix7777. Data source: Search Earthquake Archives, USGS
ELASTIC REBOUND THEORY
• Moving plates are stuck
along faults at their
boundaries because of
friction; stress builds up
in bedrock
• An earthquake happens
when the stress is too
much and overcomes
the friction
plates
move stuck from friction
stress builds
fault moves during earthquake

MEASURING GROUND MOVEMENT
• Brainstorm how scientists can measure plate
movement
MEASURING PLATE MOVEMENT
GPS Station VDCY in Southern California
• In the following
activities, you will
learn how GPS
stations like this
one continuously
measure the
changing position
of the ground near
plate boundaries
