ENGL 102 – 02 Fall 2019 Unit 3: Rhetorical Argument For this research essay, you will be arguing the social justice issue you selected and wrote a proposal for in Unit 2 – essentially you will be answering your research question. This is your chance to shine a light on an issue that you think is important by presenting the topic, the research to back your claim, and the opposing viewpoints while also creating a call to action. In order to earn a B on this assignment, you must meet all of the following requirements: 1. You must have a thesis statement that clearly and concisely presents the main idea of your essay and makes an arguable assertion. Your thesis should not make an announcement about what your essay will cover. 2. You must provide social and factual context that is appropriate for your audience. 3. Include an introduction that grabs the reader’s attention and sets up your argument. 4. Your argument should be organized into body paragraphs that flow and lead the reader through your argument in hopes that they come to the same conclusion you did. 5. You should include the opposing viewpoints using one of the methods discussed in class. 6. Include a conclusion that does more than simply restate the thesis – readdress your thesis in light of the evidence provided. Make a call to action. Provide readers with a way to help or learn more. 7. Your argument should be supported by at least 6 of the sources from your annotated bibliography. a. Supporting evidence should be integrated in a way that puts them in a conversation with themselves and with you. b. Direct quotes should not be used as sentences. c. Both quotes and paraphrasing should be used. 8. You must show an awareness to your sources’ rhetorical strategies even though you are not analyzing them. 9. You must write a minimum of 6 pages for your completed draft (this means all the way to the bottom of the sixth page). 10. You must meet all MLA guidelines for format, citations, and style. 11. Follow the conventions of English appropriate for the audience, situation, and genre. 12. Significant revision must be made between drafts. 13. Submit your completed draft on BBLearn by 11:59 PM Sunday, November 10th.
