- 14. INTERESTING FACTS The unit of a ‘foot’ was decreed by King Henry and the standard ‘foot’ is one-third of his arm length (12 inches). There has been a Queen of England who never lived there or even visited the country: Berengaria, who married Richard I. Elizabeth I was all for bowling, dice, playing cards and fencing clubs, while the majority and aldermen of London were not. George I (1714-1727) could neither speak nor write the English language. Queen Victoria’s mother tongue was not English. The language spoken at home was German and Victoria was never able to speak English perfectly, even though she ruled the country for 64 years. King Edward VII ordered to keep all the clocks at Sandringham, the royal residence, set half an hour fast. Several mistakes were made due to that. It took a local clockmaker from midnight to dawn to set the clocks right. 2 June 1953 was selected for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II because meteorologists said it was the most consistently sunny day in the calendar. However, it rained on that day.
