                                  Lesson 4: Colons and Hyphens

               A hyphen  shows the division of a word at the end of a line . Always 
               divide the word between syllables. 

                    Paul has been interested in study­
                    ing the history of his family. 

               Hyphens  are sometimes used to connect two or more words to  form 
               compound words. 

                    great­grandmother        merry­go­round        thirty­five 

               A colon is used to separate the hour and the minute in the time of day, 
               and after the greeting of a business letter.

                    Correctly add hyphens and colons where needed in the
                                          sentence.

             1.  All the children listened to their grand
             father's stories. 


             2. Mr. Cellini met his future wife and his brother in law on the 
             ship.


             3. His sister in law was also on board. 


             4. They all sat together on the deck every afternoon at 4 00. 


             5. My grandfather and his half brother enjoyed these 
             afternoons.

            7. The story he had heard was about a long let
            ter written in 1910. 


            8. The words Dear Sir began the letter.

            10. It was 8 15 before the story and Paul's interview were 
            finished.
