Unit A Study Guide
Answer all questions in complete sentences on a sheet of notebook paper.
1. Explain each part to the Investigational Design Format. Include the question,
hypothesis, variables, procedure, and conclusion.
2. Explain qualitative versus quantitative. Include AT LEAST two original examples of each.
3. What is a manipulated (independent) variable?
4. What is a responding (dependent) variable?
5. What is a controlled variable? How many should you have in a valid experiment?
6. What is an average (mean)? What is a range of numbers?
7. How could you increase the sample size of an experiment?
8. Calculate the average (mean) and range of these numbers: 7, 12, 22, 35, 8, 13, 50, 30.
9. Explain the pathway of a nerve impulse through the nervous system. Include an
explanation AND drawing with these words: sensory neurons, interneurons, motor
neurons, and muscles.
10. Review all these vocabulary words: hypothesis, scientific method, evidence, inference,
observation, control, sample size, variable, nerves, neuron, motor neuron, sensory
neuron, interneuron, nervous system, touch receptors, data, qualitative, quantitative,
average (mean), range, and sensitivity.
