Unit 57: Photography and Photographic Practice Terminology (P1, P2, M1, M2)
Term Explanation of term e.g. what it Examples
is used for / the effect it has on
                    your images
Shutter Speed A shutter speed is the length of time in
which a camera’s shutter is open
during a photo being taken. The
longer the shutter speeds the more it is
exposed to light. A short and long
shutter speed changes the amount of
                    movement in a picture.
ISO ISO is the measurement of sensitivity of
film or photos to light. The lower the
number the lower the sensitivity of the
film and the finer the grain in the shots
                    you’re taking.

Aperture & Aperture is opening in which light
Depth of field (F travels through camera lenses. The
stop) more narrow the aperture the sharper
the focus. The Depth is the distance
between an object and the camera.
                    Different depths mean different
                    focuses.
Automatic Exposure is the amount of light that fall
Exposure into the image sensor in a camera
                    during a shutter cycle. Automatic
                    exposure is where the camera
                    automatically adjusts the camera
                    depending on the amount of
                    exposure.
Manual Manual Exposure unlike automatic
Exposure exposure is where a photographer
manually adjusts the aperture of the
camera to create more exposure or
                 less.

Colour Balance Colour Balance is the adjustment of
                 primary colours within a photo
correcting what the camera is going
to take. On some cameras you can
                 get a colour correcting lenses.

Composition A composition is where objects are
placed in a certain way or the
camera is placed in a way that
                 captures a certain frame.

Rule of thirds The rule of thirds is where the main
part of the photo is not necessarily in
the middle. In the photo on the right it
is cut into nine intersections. The main
part of the image is the boat and is in
a bottom corner of the middle
                 intersection.
Complementar These types of colours are found in
y Colours opposite sides in the colour spectrum,
               such as red and green.

Analogous These types of colours are adjacent to
colours each other on the colour wheel. These
               colours usually compliment these
               each other.

Macro Macro photography is photography
that uses extreme close ups so that
they can capture small objects. It can
make the object look bigger than it
               already is.
