Introduction
How Recycling Works and why recycle?
● How Recycling works
After the recyclable material gets collected by the recovery facility, it gets sorted through and refined
into a cleaner more durable material. That material then gets re-used in many different materials and
items. The demand for recyclable materials is very randomized. (EPA 12/3/2022)
● Why Recycle?
Recycling is of utmost importance in reducing waste, conserving resources, and minimizing
pollution. By diverting materials from landfills, recycling reduces waste and extends the lifespan of
these sites. It also conserves valuable resources by reducing the demand for virgin materials and the
need for energy-intensive extraction processes. Moreover, recycling minimizes pollution by reducing
the environmental impact of manufacturing processes and the release of harmful pollutants. Through
recycling, we can foster a more sustainable and responsible society, contributing to a healthier planet
for future generations [1][2][3]
Saving the Earth
How Recycling helps the environment and protects certain things
● How Recycling Helps the environment
Recycling has significant positive environmental impacts, contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions,
energy savings, and the preservation of natural resources. By diverting waste from landfills and recycling materials, the
generation of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, is reduced. Recycling also saves energy by eliminating the need for
extracting, processing, and manufacturing products from virgin materials. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA), recycling aluminum cans saves up to 95% of the energy required to produce new cans from raw materials.
Furthermore, recycling conserves natural resources such as timber, minerals, and water, reducing the environmental
impact associated with their extraction. Embracing recycling practices plays a vital role in mitigating climate change,
promoting energy efficiency, and preserving our planet's resources for future generations [4][5].
● How it protects certain things
Recycling plays a crucial role in protecting wildlife, habitats, and ecosystems by minimizing the need for extracting and processing
raw materials. By recycling materials such as paper, plastic, and metals, we reduce the demand for resource extraction, thereby
preserving natural habitats and minimizing the destruction of ecosystems. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA),
recycling one ton of paper can save 17 trees, 7,000 gallons of water, 380 gallons of oil, and 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space. By
reducing the pressure on natural resources, recycling helps to maintain biodiversity, protect wildlife habitats, and safeguard the
delicate balance of ecosystems, ensuring a healthier environment for both wildlife and humans [6][7].
Methods of Recycling
Noticing recyclable and non-recyclable items and how to recycle properly
● Noticing recyclable and non-recyclable items
Commonly recyclable items include paper, plastic bottles, and aluminum cans. Paper products such as newspapers, office paper, and
cardboard can typically be recycled. Plastic bottles made from PET (polyethylene terephthalate) or HDPE (high-density polyethylene)
plastics are commonly accepted for recycling. Aluminum cans, commonly used for beverages, are highly recyclable due to their valuable
metal content. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), these items are widely accepted for recycling in most communities
in the United States (source: EPA, "Recycling Basics"). [8]
● How to recycle properly
1. Sort Recyclables: Notice differences between what is recyclable or not. Commonly recyclable materials include: plastic, paper
and glass
2. Clean containers: Rinse out any items that may have any liquid inside them particularly cans and bottles. No one likes a half
empty can.
3. Remove non-recyclables: Common non-recyclable items include: plastic bags, Styrofoam or hazardous waste. Also look at the
guidelines of whatever facility you go to recycle. There are always instructions and people with advice.
Your Workspace
Applying knowledge and workspace recycling locations
● Applying knowledge
I encourage everyone to apply their knowledge of recycling and adopt sustainable practices in their workspace to
minimize waste and promote environmental responsibility. Implementing recycling bins for paper, plastic, and other recyclable
materials can make a significant impact. Encourage colleagues to reuse items like paper, envelopes, and packaging materials
whenever possible. Consider using digital documents and emails instead of printing excessively. Promoting a culture of
recycling and waste reduction in the workplace can lead to a more sustainable and environmentally conscious environment.
Let's strive to make a positive change and contribute to a greener future. You guys got this!
● Workspace recycling locations
In our workspace, recyclable bins are usually laid out in the main eastern hall in different categories. You can find a
recycle bin in your nearest bathroom and lunch room as well. I encourage all of you guys to locate these bins are recycle your
materials properly.
Conclusion
● Recycling benefits and applying knowledge everywhere
Recycling offers numerous key benefits that contribute to environmental protection, resource conservation, and waste
reduction. Firstly, recycling helps protect the environment by reducing pollution, conserving energy, and minimizing
the extraction of raw materials. It plays a vital role in mitigating climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Secondly, recycling conserves valuable resources by reusing materials and reducing the demand for virgin resources.
This preserves natural habitats, reduces deforestation, and minimizes the need for energy-intensive extraction and
manufacturing processes. Lastly, recycling reduces waste by diverting materials from landfills, extending their lifespan,
and minimizing the associated environmental risks. Embracing recycling practices is a crucial step towards building a
more sustainable and responsible society. [9]
● Apply this knowledge not only to your workspace but to all around you
Now that we've covered all that we need to know about the significance and importance of recycling it is your choice
that you make in the future about recycling. If only people could take a few extra seconds to properly recycle and
know that you make a great impact by doing so. Recycling shouldn't apply to only your workspace but your household
and everywhere you go! By doing so your making the world a greater place, one step at a time.
