Urinary System

Abbreviations of the Urinary System
 ARF-Acute Renal Failure
 Cath-Catheterization
 RP-Retrograde Pyelogram
 KUB-Kidneys, Ureters, Bladder
 UTI-Urinary Tract Infection
ARF Acute Renal Failure
 Also known as Acute Kidney
  Injury means that your kidneys
  suddenly stopped working.
 The kidneys remove waste and
  help balance; water, salt, and
  other minerals (electrolytes) in
  the blood.
 When the kidneys stop working,
  waste products, fluids, and
electrolytes build up in the body
  causing major problems that can
  escalate.
ARF Acute Renal Failure
 3 Main causes of ARF  A sudden blockage that stops urine from
 Sudden serious drop of blood flow to the flowing out to the kidneys; Kidney
kidneys. Heavy blood loss, an injury, a bad Stones, Tumor, Injury, or an Enlarged
infection (Sepsis) can reduce blood flow to prostate gland.
the kidneys, Not enough fluid in the body
(dehydration) can cause damage to the
kidneys (So drink plenty of water)
 Damage to kidneys can result from taking
in some Medicines, Poisons, and or
    Infections.
 Some Medicines can cause harm to people
    such as: -Gentamicin –Streptomycin
 Pain medicines such as Aspirin/ Ibuprofen
 Some blood pressure medicines (ACE
    Inhibitors.
 Dyes used in some X-Ray machines.
cath Catheterization
 A catheterization is
 inserting a catheter tube
 through the urethra and
 into the urinary bladder
 for the purpose of
 moving fluids into or out
 of the body or inserting
 dye.
cath Catheterization
 A catheterization
  sometimes can be used if;
  unable to discharge
  urine, undergoing
  surgery, physically
  confined to bed and
  cannot use the bed-
  pan, critically ill patients
  that require urine output.
 Precautions: Can cause
  Urinary Tract Infections if
  catheterizations are not
  properly change
  adequately.
RP Retrograde Pyelogram
 Dye is inserted through
 the urethra to color
 enhance the outlining
 urinary bladder, ureters,
 and renal pelves for an
 X-ray.
RP Retrograde Pyelogram
 The Retrograde Pyelogram or RP is
used to determine if kidney stones
or something else can be blocking
  the urinary tract.
 Some people may have this
procedure done if they cannot take
  the (IVP) Intravenous Pyelogram,
which is the dye is injected in a vein
  through the arm.
KUB Kidneys, Ureters, Bladder
 KUB which is also
  known as a flat-plate
  abdomen uses an X-ray
  on the abdomen to
  visualize the
  kidneys, ureters, and
  bladder.
 This method does not
  use any contrast Dye.
UTI Urinary Tract Infection
 UTI are germs that travel up the urethra.  Possible Symptoms:
The germs that cause UTI are found in
                                                Feel pain/burning while urinating
the large intestine and is found in stool
(Fecal Matter).  Feel like urinating often but little or
                                                 nothing comes out
 Women tend to get UTI more often
because their Urethras are short.  Belly feels tender or heavy
 You are more likely to get UTI if you do  Urine is cloudy/smells bad
not drink enough fluids, have  Pain on one side of your back
diabetes, or if pregnant. underneath Ribs (Where kidneys are)
 UTI if not treated right away it can  Fever chills
transfer to the kidneys and cause major  Nausea/ vomiting
  infections.
                                                TREATMENT: Antibiotics, Pain
 A bladder infection is not that serious relievers Tylenol/ Advil/ Aleve
but if it gets to the kidneys seek Medical
 Drink plenty of water & cranberry juice
  help right away.
 To relieve pain take a hot bath
                                                Urinating completely/ frequently
